And that's with the OEM tires, right? Imagine how it would have done with snow tires!

It was damp this morning and going around a slight-downhill jug handle, i lost traction with traction control blinking for a good second. i wasnt going fast and i was kind of expecting it, but it put a smile on my face. lol
i blame the tires. overall i dont hate them but ive heard theyre below average from multiple sources. |

The Yoko Avids make me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. You know, like the feeling you get at the end of a romantic comedy when the guy and the girl finally admit that they love each other.
Like this: So I guess I'll keep them until they wear out. Then I'll replace them with tires that make me feel like this: |

I replaced them at time of purchase. I didn't want the "warm and fuzzy" feeling inside as I was sliding into a ditch.

So do I. That's what I watch when I'm not watching romantic comedies with the wife. Since the two genres are at opposite ends of the movie spectrum, it helps keep my life in balance. Maybe we should make our Imprezas "Death Proof". http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1028528/ |

I think in actual snow the tires would have done better, but it was an extremely wet heavy snow that instantly turned to slush, even 4x4 pickups were going slow this morning so i was quite satisfied |

One thing that makes snow tires so effective in snow and slush is that the tread is designed to fling the packed snow out of the tread, so they stay clear. Non-snow tires don't do this as effectively, decreasing their grip.
Then there's the snow tires' siping, but that's another story. http://tires.about.com/od/understand...-Is-A-Sipe.htm |

DWS is what I got. I had them on my '08 OBS and they were excellent and quieter on the Highway. Also they cost a lost less and provide more mileage before wear out. I gave away the original tires (dealer gave me about 1/2 the cost for the DWS replacement; but, didn't want the original tires).

My wife says our jetta did well this morning and that has Goodyear trippletreads on it. She also drove away from the heaviest snow where i went straight into it. The jetta has always been good in snow, even with the Bridgestone turanza el400's which were supposed to be crappy tires, even so we got 70k out of them. There is more forecast for tonight so i will test my car again tomorrow i know the stock tires aren't great, but i have definitely driven worse in the winter. Bfg traction t/a's are horrible winter tires.... |

i have a set of DWS at my house, but with stock tires on the car. DWS are great tires, i had them on my girlfriends c240 4matic. but so far the stock tires are have decent dry and wet grip but the hydroplane resistance is crap!!! scared the crap out of me a few times. this the second worst hydroplane resistance tire i ever had, the other tire was an extreme summer tire that was basically a slick tire.

Have DWS on both the Subaru and our Mazda. Won't use another all-season tire. Ever. That is how good it is. If we ever move somewhere that requires winter tires, I would probably still use the DWS as a spring/summer tire. They are really that good.

The stock tires are pretty terrible, I can't imagine these on a FF car, when traction control kicks in on an AWD car.

The Yoko Avids haven't caused me any distress yet. But I do have dedicated snow tires/wheels that I'll be installing at around Thanksgiving time, which will give me confidence when the roads really get sketchy.

But that "softness" also results in increased wear if you use the tires year round. I had 4 snow tires on my T-Bird that I used year round; however, at that time I only drove about 2/3k per year and the tires would start to dry rot before they showed any sign of wear. T-Bird was a 2 ton sled, got stuck even on level ground even with the snow tires.

I few pages back I complained about the car swaying left and right, and someone said that it was the tires. Did a little more research and found out what I was experiencing was called tramlining. I definitely cannot wait until the Avids wear out so I can get a new set.

ok again, it is not raining that bad and i am having hydroplaning issues. im quite certain, if anyone in my family drove this car over the puddle it would be a little disastrous. i manage to stay within my lane, but the front end kept trying to slide out and into the other lane. i was traveling about 30-35 mph. anyways, i cant wait for these tires to wear down. not sure how confident i am now about it snowing here. i have been too spoiled with the DWS in the other car.
also, i should mention. i do have plenty of driving experience in the rain. i dont drive like a lunatic. im actually the guy who drives five miles under the speed limit and is very cautious. i also race cars as well (dry and rain), so i know how to control a car very well than most people and i know how to react to under/oversteer. |
