How hard is it to replace an axle? One of mine has a torn inner boot and is clicking so I want to replace not re grease and boot it. I can see the axle nut is rusted and it's an auto if that makes a difference.

Need a 32mm socket, remove ball joints, push out locking pins on the axle, about an hour work with the right skills and tools. Rears, same but no pins, just pry them out. No easy task for a Lawyer, lol!

Yeah I did that once on my WRX. Would have taken me a week if it weren't for my uncle showing up and doing it for me. Buy a complete axle, they're cheap enough. They take the old one as a core fee.

Yep, just buying a complete axle. May as well install the aluminum control arms at the same time which means finding a good deal on a whiteline roll center adjustment kit first. And should probably do the brakes at the same time. Not going to bother with lowering the car this summer but probably will next year.
Sounds like a lot of work. Anyone want to help? |

A few words of wisdom..... 1. Chock wheels 2. Loosen lug nuts 3. Jack up car 4. Remove wheel 5. Pop out center cap from wheel 6. Put wheel back on with 2 lug nuts 7. Lower car 8. Use 32mm socket and 1/2" drive breaker bar (the longest one you can find or even put a piece of pipe over the end to create more leverage) and break the axle nut loose 9. Jack up car 10. Put it on jackstand 11. Remove wheel 12. Check to see if the axle is seized into the spindle. Push on the end of the axle to see if it starts sliding out. Sometimes the axle will seize into the spindle. If it doesn't move with some help, take the old axle nut and screw it back on the axle. Take a block of wood and put it against the axle nut. Strike the wood with a 3 lb hammer to drive the axle out of the spindle. You're not pushing it all the way out, just getting it started to move. You have to do this now because if you pull the knuckle off the ball joint, the whole assembly will be hanging from the strut with no lateral support and you won't be able to get enough force on it to drive it out. Once you see the axle move a bit, move on to step 13. 13. Unbolt the caliper bracket and hang it from spring with wire coathanger 14. Remove rotor 15. Unbolt tie rod from knuckle (best to use a tie rod separator so you don't mess up the tie rod threads) 16. Remove ball joint pinch bolt (these are notorious for snapping so be VERY careful and don't force it if it feels like it's not turning) You should even spray it with PB Blaster a few times in the days before you plan to do the job. 17. Use a long pry bar to lift the knuckle off the big end of the ball joint 18. Use a punch to push out the axle pin on the trans side of the axle. One side of the axle stub has a concave dip around the hole. Push out the pin from this side. 19. Remove axle. Installation is the generally the same in reverse. |

You dont have to touch the ball joint, tie rods or brakes to change an axle.
Pull the wheel, loosen the axle nut, take a hammer and punch to knock the axle splines loose into the hub, then loosen the ball joint nut, then break the control arm free from the knuckle, stand on the arm so it clears and and pull the hub away from the car, the axle will plop out, then take a punch/screw driver to knock out the pin on the inside. It takes me about 20-30 minutes to do, if you take your time its cake. And now you also dont need to get an alignment Rear axles suck. |

$12k for a luxury car? Good luck paying those luxury repair bills. For $12k, get something realistic and easily repaired. Don't get something dumb like a BMW/Benz with 95k miles on it. You're a college student. I say get a Nissan 240 with an LS swap and put the other $6k in the bank. That's probably the most fun you can have in a car.

If that's the case, save yourself some money and buy a newer Subi... The repairs on Audi's are costly.

Ok, not doing the axle myself, seems too easy to screw something up. Anyone want to help do an axle and brakes? I'll drive to you, bring breakfast and or lunch and a wad of singles from my night job.
