OMGHi2U Donde está el estacionamiento para el Subaru? : Rally Catalunya starts March 24!

After his great finish in Ireland, I'm really hoping to see Atkinson podium on the first true tarmac WRC event of the year.

Also, looks like Solberg found his legs in Mexico, he's never been much of a Tarmac driver, but he should have the confidence to do well

Marcus isn't as good as he is on gravel. In the days of the 206, it was Panizzi for teh win!

Loeb definately has the advantage on tarmac, but it's nice for petter to have finished a rally and start gaining some points.

Maybe even solberg and atkinson duking it out for podium?! Who's to say.

Subaru feeling optimistic about Rally Catalunya

Moya & Farrell talk about the Spanish event

After an encouraging performance in Mexico, the Subaru World Rally Team are back in Europe for the next round of the World Championship, Rally Catalunya.

Team Directors Luis Moya and Steve Farrell describe the challenge ahead for this first asphalt event of the 2006 season.

Luis Moya, Sporting Director
“We need to count Rally Catalunya as the first asphalt event of the year as Monte Carlo is always a bit of an anomaly. The testing we've done with the car last week was very positive and the tyres suit the road surface extremely well.

“It's the first real sealed surface rally of 2006 so we have no benchmark to measure ourselves against. We can't compare this year to last as we've made some changes and the car is very different – we'll just have to wait and see, but we're all very optimistic about the chances of a good result.

“We're back in Spain now after only five months so the route hasn't changed a great deal, but the weather may well be a factor as it is very unstable at the moment. It will be as difficult to predict the conditions as it will be to predict the outcome of the rally.”

Steve Farrell, Director of Engineering
“Spain will be the first of two paired asphalt events. The demands between gravel and asphalt are very different and the past few sealed surface events have not proven just reward for our efforts. Since Germany last year we've been working extremely hard on developing a much more specialised car.

“Most of the differences concern the brakes and the tyres, however we've also introduced a suspension package with completely new uprights and geometry. Clearly the regulation changes mean we're also having to evaluate the performance of mechanical differentials. We looked at the car's set-up in a four day asphalt test in Italy last week in addition to an intensive tyre testing programme. It was very productive – Pirelli has done a fantastic job and come up with some tyres that look very promising, so we're optimistic about the rally. We feel we've got a good all-round package.”
Go Petter Go!

I'm looking forward to seeing how Atkinson can do... He's been impressive on the past couple of tarmac events he's done (Monte and Ireland.) Particularly considering that I can count on one hand the number of tarmac rallies he's done before, and he has no previous experience of the events. Spain will be the first time he runs a tarmac rally that he's done previously.

We interupt this thread for a Test of the WRC Emergency Spoiler System.

Petter Wins!

Loeb Crashes out!

This concludes the Test of the WRC Emergency Spoiler System.

If this had been an actual spolier you would have seen people moan and whine it real time even though when they clicked on this thread they knew that there would have been a discussion of actual events as they were occurring.

It's always been the same, there is only one thread per Rally (this one) and THERE WILL BE SPOILERS IN THIS THREAD, after all, this is the thread where we talk about the Rally at hand.

Why? did I miss something

Yeah, they were.

Attn spoiler pansies,

This thread is what WM said it was, a live discussion of events that are happening in real time. I don't want to see this thread go the way of the mexico thread.

Thanks,

Management

I seem to remember you bitching at me about how someone spoiled Monte Carlo for you in a long winded PM conversation. Remember that?

No of course you don't, right....

That certainly wasn't in the official Monte Carlo thread. If I had a problem with you posting spoilers, it was obviously in a not-official rally thread.

All official Rally threads have spoilers, that's the rules and the expectation. ANY OTHER THREAD, with spoilers, will not be tolerated.

Now, kindly remove the abrasives from your crotchal region.

Oh wait, now I remember, someone posted a spoiler about Sweden in a very premature Mexico thread, I locked it, and you had a coronary.

You sir, need to kindly pull your head out of your rectum.

Me, pull my head out of my rectum? Who's the hypocrite here, me or you? A month ago you're flipping out about a very vague spoiler in a thread for the next rally and now you're criticizing people who didn't appreciate very pointed spoilers in the Mexico thread? Man, I really wish I had saved those PMs so I could properly call you out on it.

The spoiler in question was quite innocous anyway, somebody said something about Petter having a string of bad luck in that early Mexico thread and you went absolutely beserk. You went as far as to lock the thread which is why I then PMed you in the first place.

Honestly, I don't care either way about the spoilers, I just though I'd point out that inconsistency on your part. Really, I think you changed directions on the issue after your little hiatus when you realized the vocal majority was against you.

Catalunya : OMV Peugeot Norway - Preview

After three runs to the FIA World Rally Championship 2006 OMV driver Manfred Stohl is holding on to third place in the standings. This gives rise to expectations for the future even though the next two scheduled races, the Rally RACC Catalunya Costa-Durada (March 23 to 26) and the Rally Corsica (April 6 to 9) will be held on tarmac. Not exactly the 33-year-old Austrian's favourite surface. He will still try his all to remain among the big 3 in the WRC before the beginning of the gravel season.

Taking a break in manufacturer championship
For the first time this season the OMV Peugeot Norway WRT will be competing with only one car. This is due to the fact that the team had only entered 12 rallies in the manufacturer 2-ranking at the end of entry in the middle of December 2005 ***65533; and FIA-regulation states that they can only score at these twelve rallies in 2006 in this particular system. But it had also been announced in December that Manfred Stohl would compete in all 16 rallies. Spain and Corsica will therefore be the first two rallies this year where Manfred Stohl will go solo in the OMV Peugeot Norway WRT and only be able to score in the driver's championship.

Training runs will be hard work
It was in 2001 when Manfred Stohl had last competed at a WRC event in Spain. Back then the course was still in the vicinity of Lloret del mar. Thus the OMV driver only knows one or two special stages of the current course. Which makes the training runs all the more important.

Stohl: ***65533;Ilka and I will have a lot of work ahead of us. We'll have to write completely new pace notes, since there won't be any reference points from previous years. But we are experienced enough to solve this problem, as well.***65533; In 2001 Stohl drove a Fiat Punto in the 1600-class and lead in the Junior-WRC after seven special stages before dropping back due to tyre damage.

Fast and good grip
Even though tarmac might not be the Austrian's favourite surface, he is still looking forward to the Rally RACC Catalunya. ***65533;I know that the tarmac has a lot of grip there. The turn speed is supposed to be extremely high. You have to cut a very smooth line to be able to compete. But this should suit me,***65533; explains the OMV driver. He trusts the basic set-up by Bozian Racing as far as the tuning is concerned (Stohl: ***65533;They have a lot of experience and will surely get it right.***65533;). Last tests on tarmac will take place in Spain on March 20. They will be held on the former special stages of the Rally of Spain.

More points than Petter Solberg
Manfred Stohl's personal expectations remain realistic. The OMV driver wants to score in any case. Stohl: ***65533;With Bozian Racing, the Peugeot 307 WRC and the tyres by BF Goodrich I have make an absolutely competitive package. I plan to take advantage of this.***65533; Stohl hopes to score more points than Petter Solberg (Nor/Subaru). This would suffice to defend his sensational position in the driver's ranking. His self-confidence should be up in any case. The Austrian has reached four special stage best times so far which makes him fourth in this statistic behind Sebastien Loeb (Fra/Citroen), Marcus Gr***65533;nholm (Fin/Ford) and Petter Solberg.

347 special stage kilometres on 16 special stages
The 42nd Rally RACC Catalunya will commence on Thursday (March 23) with a showstart at 20.00 in Salou. 16 special stages with a length of 346,43 kilometres are scheduled from Friday to Sunday (March 24 - 26). The overall length measures 1.376,14 kilometres. The finishing line will be crossed on Sunday ( March 26) at 14:56 in Salou.

This is Spain
Area: 504.782 sq km; Population: 40.341.500 inhabitants; Population density: 80 people per sq km; Capital: Madrid (4.060.000 inhabitants); Spain was founded in 1035 and has been independent since then. The rally takes place in Catalonia. Catalonia (biggest city: Barcelona) is one of the biggest regions of Spain with a population of six million inhabitants. Spain disposes of 658.203 kilometres of paved roads.

I thought Stephane Sarrazin was SWRT's tarmac expert. Is he not on the team anymore?
