Yeah there's a difference between nicely modifying a 2.5i and rice-ing the **** out of it.

I sympathize with the OP.
I went in to the Subaru dealership in February 09 with the intention of buying an '08 2.5i knowing I couldn't afford a $25k car (WRX). My luck was good that night because there was an 08 WRX on the lot marked down to $19,500. The issue I had to deal with after was all the idiots making fun of my car because it looked like a Corolla. I couldn't care less. I had a WRX! The people making fun of you for having a 2.5i are shallow and heartless. They could never own a 2.5i and be happy with it the way you are, and that says a lot about you. |

I love how everyone is patting OP on the back saying he did the responsible thing by purchasing a NA car. What we should be saying is: "DUUUDE, you bought a 5 year old car and 'paid' for it with a 5 year loan on the dealership's bad credit/no credit lending terms...? You got hosed, son!" Sometimes the truth hurts, but OP belongs in a hooptie purchased with $1000 cash outright until he can build credit, maintain stable employment, and invest in assets that appreciate in value.
Some car ideas within OP's budget: http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show....php?t=1861412 |

Why's that? He didn't indicate he had any issues paying for the car/saving while paying that loan. A car being a necessity, it's not a bad way to build initial credit. I did the same (my first car was an 03 2.5RS 4EAT), and I have very nearly a perfect credit score today.
On general principle of how to handle personal finances, I agree with your outline. However, ESPECIALLY right now, there is very little that qualifies as an appreciating asset. That's a model from when the economy was on the up and housing was infallible (which was never true anyhow). I do agree with the guy earlier on who said don't pay the car off with the settlement though. I don't know what your interest rate is, but if it's <3% or so, I say ride it out to the end, or to the last year at least. Granted if your financial situation changes, different things make sense. |

Yeah, still not buying into the "only real enthusiasts buy slow cars and modify them" nonsense.
If that's what you want to do, that's completely fine. But don't act like you're super elite because "you built your car, not bought it". The only reason you didn't buy it is because you couldn't afford it. (This isn't directed at the OP, just in general....) |

Where did anyone say anything of the sort? "slow" is a pretty stupid term to use in this sense. My NA Impreza is often faster than cars with significantly more power through tight courses. It's not a matter of eliteness, or real enthusiasts, it's a matter of using what you've got. I race and modify a $3500 car because I prefer it. I can afford to buy a fully prepped WRC car if I chose to. How does that line up with your logic? There's a lot of configurations you can't simply buy -- and a lot of us enjoy working on cars and doing it ourselves anyhow. Saying that you do it because you can't afford to have someone else do it is one of the douchiest things I've ever heard, and we just went through a presidential election. |

I mean if you're going to go that route...Buying a subaru and dropping 10k into it to make it into an 11 second car as opposed to buying a mustang gt or evo and dropping 10k would net completely different results. It's your car do whatever the hell you want to it. How can you call someone a moron for modding their car how they want. It's not like he doesn't know it will probably only net him 5hp. He doesn't care and he got it because he liked the sound, the look of it, or because he damn well wanted to.

Well, that pretty much summarizes what this guy said....

Fast cars are fast cars. I respect cars in general, I don't really care about your socioeconomic situation, if your parents paid for it, etc. Once you graduate high school and get out in the real world, you tend not to think about that kind of stuff. Someone always has something more expensive and faster. |

Fair enough, I don't read it that way -- but then again I tend to ignore anything referring to "respect" and cars.
More the torque curve and low-end of the NA, helps quite a lot in RallyX. The extra power tends to just be spun off as it's incredibly hard to put down even as much as the 2.5 NA is making. Quote:

I have no problem with N/A subies and people modding them. I was actually going to agree with you until I clicked on your youtube link in your profile and saw this. This **** is ****ing dumb and is what really bothers me. I hope you never do this again OP or at least put it on your public youtube profile for everyone to see
Edit: also turn your damn hi-beams off and stop blinding on coming traffic. /endrant |

Nevermind the ridiculously dangerous aspect of doing that speed on public roads... Your dude bro-ness is as unbearable as the (what seemed like an hour long) 40-130 jaunt. "I award you no points and may god have mercy on your soul."

I hope you crash and live so you can be prosecuted, hopefully with no other collateral damage other than your car and maybe the highway median.
