Gas Guage Oddities
As you know i recently picked up a '04 Legacy.
Just wondering, anyone elses gas guage act like this? I'll get 200 miles to the 1/2 way point. And driving another 75 miles or so i'll drop down to 1/8 tank. If i fill up, it only takes 12-12.5 gallons. Also, how low does that needle go before the low fuel light comes on, i've gotten it down to the line, and still nothing. I'm at 1700 miles now, figuring if it's not correct by the 3000 first oil change mark, i'll bring it to their attention.

Yeah...mine is a little goofy too, but not too bad.
I usually get more to the first half of the tank then I do to the second half...also, the light doesn't come on till it hits the line usually...and I've driven around with 2-3 gallons left and it being below the line. dunno, not a big problem for me, but if it bothers you then bring it to their attention good luck fibuz |

Thanks for the very fast reply (2 mintues). It doesn't bother me too much, i'm just figuring it out. It get's me excited when i think i can go 400 miles on a tank, then i end up at 275 needing gas. Throws off those long road trips too. I'll probably bring it to their attention. Heck, today i was at 100 miles and the needle was still on "F".

heh, yeah...I get those moments when I think I can make it a 400 mile tank....but the most i've seen is ~350 running just about empty Usually I get ~300 to the tank with gas-light on for 30-40 miles.

I have seen 400 a couple of times. I normally get around 350 or a little bit less. I do drive 60 miles a day for work all highway so I am sure that helps.

200~250 miles to E line
and when i fill up its only 11.5 gal out of 16.9 total capacity so the guage is really screwed |

I also seem to go about 200-250 on half a tank, and then the guage drops like a rock. I've taken a couple of long trips since getting my car, and have seen 375-400 during each. around 300-325 seems to be the norm, though.

I get to 45 miles on a full tank, and it reads as 9/10 full. I'll hit 50 miles, and it drops to 3/4 full. At around 100 miles, it'll say it's at half tank. Then, it'll stay around half a tank until it gets into the 180 miles range, then it drops.
I can get 200-230 miles on a tank. Never had the fuel light come on, though. Mine was fine until they started adding all of the additives here. |

Does the light (low fuel) turn on when you first turn on the car, like all the other warning lights do (to verify the bulb is good)? Mine does not and I don't know if this is normal. Mine is an Impreza, but I guess they are similar.

my light turns on and then after about 5min it turns off and then doesn;t come back on again, at least it never has even after an extra 20 miles. Seems whack.

I've owned and driven 3 Subarus and the gas gauge phenomenon occured in all 3 of them, it's something that i have just accepted with Subaru. I've learned the hard way to trust the trip odometer more than the gauge itself. A little math never hurt anyone

I have the exact same problem in my MY00 GT Limited Sedan 5MT
VERY weird. I will be at like 200 miles at the halfway point, assuming that I could get 400 miles to the tank! But then it just goes down quickly from there.I can drive like 75-100 miles though with the needle still on "F", just after I have filled it up. |

speaking of guage oddities, do any of you have the wavering speedo? mine seems like it sticks when i go around 15 mph and it actually bounces up and down from 0-40 and back and forth until i hit about 20 and then it works normally. it also does the same thing when i slow down to that speed.

The problem you are having is with the fuel sensors. I had the same thing and took it into subaru dealership. Luckily I purchased an extended warrany when I bought the car (45,000 mi) and the fix was only $50 deductible. If I did not have the warranty the mechanic said it would be a $250-300 fix. Hope this helps and if it bothers you as much as it did to me I would advise getting it fixed.1

There is a fix for the 2/3 empty tank being indicated by a 1/2 empty gas guage? My 04 Baja turbo does the exact same thing, and I thoght it was a goofy Baja thing (along with its goofy style). Is that a faulty sensor? And Subaru continued using that faulty sensor for 4 years?

My CEL was going crazy and my fuel gauge was doing exactly what everyone has been describing, and when I got the fuel sensors replaced everything has been fixed. If enough people have this problem, shouldnt there be a recall? 1

since changing to the K&N Filter and increasing my tire pressures, my MPG has actually improved. I'm averaging around 28MPG now. sometimes more, sometimes less. i do plenty of mixed driving too. |
