I noticed a big difference in spool time going from no blanket to the original blanket. Going from original blanket to lava I didn't notice a difference. That's not saying there isn't an improvement, but its not enough to notice. But if your going from no blanket to lava, you will notice a huge difference in spool time and throttle response. You will love the difference, and you are very welcome.

OK, I know this seems pitiful, but this is the 1st mod I'll be doing to a strange car to me. (I've had the hood open 3 times--including today).

What is the recommended installation procedure? I can see 6 small bolts holding the heatshield on. Are there more? What about TMIC removal--is that necessary, or even much help?

I must admit that I had expected something a little more substantial in terms of mounting/installation other than a roll of wire and some eyelets. I guess that's really all that's needed, however.

Any pointers?

the intecooler will have to come off... to get to the heat shield.

Im not sure how its going to go having all the stock heatshield stuff... but you will have to get the car up pretty high so that you can get up under the turbo.
After you take off the heat shield, you wrap the blanket around the hot side then you have to get underneath the car and reach up and wire it together.

I ran one wire on the front side of the up pipe and the other on the back side of the up pipe.

if you are good with safety wire and have some safety wire pliers, it helps...
if not, its kinda a pita.

Damn. Really? I didn't expect to need to lift the car. obviously the more tools you have and the more you remove to gain accesibility, the better. But, I lifting the car?

Are there others who have installed this thing "shadetree mechanic" style without lifts, tmic removal etc.? Shoot--I'm not even sure how the damn thing is supposed to be oriented in terms of the nothces, nameplate, etc.

I'm sucking right now~

Use a 1/4" drive wratchet 10mm socket for the heatshield bolts. If I remember right there are 7+/- hold the OEM heatshield in place. The tmic doesn't need go come off, but it would help you out with your installation. If you are unsure of installation you can refer to perrins website and view thiers for the turbo blanket. Don't overthink this, just wrap the blanket over the hotside of the turbo top side, then fish the wire through the bottom after its already attached to one of the rivit sides. Then wrap the wire around the other rivits tightening the blanket in place.

There is no reason to lift the car for a turbo blanket install.

i just jacked it up... not that big of a deal... if you change your own oil,... jacking up a car should be 30 seconds.

how did you tell where to route your wires without looking underneath?

i guess you can just fish them through without knowing but i made sure they were routed like i wanted them to be.

Thanks for all the tips on installing the blanket. One quick question. Will the PTP blanket fit under the stock heat shield? Ideally I would like to retain all the stock heat shields. Also I read somewhere that Perrin blanket fits under the stock shield and from the pics it looks similar to PTP's. But would like to confirm first with someone who kept the stocker. Thanks!

Yes, it is covered with dei's gold foil. You can see testing results for that in volume 2 testing.

Yes, the original blanket will fit under the OEM heatshield. The lava blanket should as well, its a little bigger in size, but should fit with no issues.

TMIC definitely does not need to come off to remove heatshield. There was plently of room for me to remove my stocker, wrap my turbo, and install the Grimmspeed HS.

However, if you have a buddy, installing the blanket with be 9,000,000x easier than doing it on your own. I was underneath the car, my buddy helped out wrapping the wire around the little nubs on the blanket (not sure if there is a technical term for these) and passing it down to me, so I could pass it up through the other side around/under the turbo.

In my experience, the TMIC is a bitch to get back on once you take it off. Do yourself a favor and don't take it off if a turbo blanket is all you're doing.

Both of the ones I installed on my car I did without going underneath it at all. It really wasn't hard at all to fish the wires around from above.

I can second this, it really is a very easy install and fishing the tie wire back around is a breeze.

I agree.

I attached the wires to the buttons on one side of the blanket first. After fishing the wires behind and underneath the turbo, I used them to help guide the blanket into place. It seemed very easy without getting under the car!

There are definitely multiple ways to do this. Both methods described above (yours and mine) do not involve removal of the TMIC - which is what I was getting at.

Point is, everyone has offered their experience, opinions and advice. This is a great example of a succesful forum discussion.

I will attempt to do the install from above, without tmic removal. Thanks for all of the insight, everyone.

Great thread with real data. What is really like to see now are tests against one of those $50 ebay turbo blankets, at least to benchmark against a known premium brand like PTP. It would be a surprise if the ebay ones were even close in blocking radiant heat.

for what its worth... ive gotten pretty good at taking off the tmic. i havent timed it but im thinking 2 mins...
pops right back on also. no issues.
makes it so much easier to work around the turbo.

i suggest getting used to removing it... but just my suggestion.

It is such an incredibly easy thing to do. It is a very common thing amateurs do trying to skip steps for no reason. It usually just aggravates you. And all you have to do was unscrew 6 quick screws/bolts.

What's incredibly easy? installing the the blanket without tmic removal?

Is the 6 quick bolt removal referring to the heat shield, or the tmic?

The removal is indeed quite simple, I personally found the re-installation to be a pita. Fitting it into the IC>TB hose and lining it up with the turbo was a pita for me. Removal is all of about 2 minutes, my re-installation was nearly 45. Like I said, it was my first time, and I replaced the IC>TB hose, but I needed a few beers to get it done.

It helps to put a bit of oil on the TB coupler (all round teh inside) to help it slide on the TB. I can take it ona nd off easy, it's just a pint to fit the damn TB hose while it's attached to the Cold-side.

I thought you weren't supposed to use oil on silicone? Thought it degrades it or something... I'll have to try that next time. Hopefully there won't be one.
I did the hose first and the cold side last. Probably would have been nearly impossible to fit it into the hose while attached to the turbo or bracket.
