Plug & Wire Time
Hello All, I have a 2001 H6 Outback and it is time to change the plugs and wires. There is one problem I have.....Can't find the damn things!!
Can someone pass the information to me how to accomplish this, I would sure appreciate it. Update: My statement of "Can't find the damn things" is directed to the plugs themselves in the engine. I know they go into the heads, but do you have to drop or raise the engine to get to them?? There appears to be a head cover and it is right off the frame. I can't figure out how to get it off past the frame. Thanks

Dealership? To my knowledge, no one makes aftermarket Subaru spark plug wires except Magnecore and their fitment is iffy. Go to the dealer and buy OEM. www.subaruparts.com or other online discount retailer/dealer is another option.

are you familiar with the "flat" layout of the H6 engine? The sparkplugs would be on either side of the engine...follow the spark plug wires.
Actually, I have no idea, since I've never really seen an H6 engine up close. I just assume its like any other Subie engine. |

I assume the H-6 is similar in this respect to the boxer-4s, and if so, you'll need a pretty deep sparkplug socket. Like a 6" one, at least. I have a 4" socket I think and it won't reach the plugs.
I don't think the aftermarket plug wires are worth it. Same game as fancy speaker cables for home/car audio: so long as they're the proper gauge (thickness), and so long as they're decently shielded, it doesn't matter how much you spend. Home Depot cable on a spool is just as good as $250 super-ultra-sexy-awesome-gimme-it-now cable from a specialty store. But, it's a very split argument. You've heard my side. So, IMO, the OE cable is fine. You might also try www.subaruwrxparts.com in New Hampshire. North Ursalia is the parts man there (Brian). He'll treat you right, and NH has no sales tax. =S2= |

Uh... I don't think your car has plug wires. You have coil-on-plug, right? There's an ignition coil mounted on each of the 6 spark plugs. I think they're held in by captive bolts with 12mm heads. The plugs would be concealed by the coils.
