lexan question
i searched for lexan windshields, but didnt really see stuff that pertains to what im looking for. i read the DIY windshield thread, which is informative since thats what im looking to replace. however, what im looking for is any specific place to buy one, or just the materials to make one.
since im virginal in this () area any input is appreciated. fwiw its a 02 wrx, DD but as soon as i get $ to get a beater im stripping the interior to hopefully make a "street legal" track car. im not too concerned with the price, unless its just recockulously more than a glass windscreen.

I ordered my lexan from Shields, it's precut and formed like OEM glass. It's also anti scratch and anti fog coated.

whatever you go with make sure you get lexan with an anti-scratch coating. With uncoated lexan it will need to be replaced after a year or two.

cool, thanks guys. i did read that it can "yellow" over time, is that a real issue? the other thing, would i have to install a support beam in the middle of the windshield to secure the lexan?

high quality stuff shouldn't yellow but the sun can cause it to craze over time... usually takes a cpl years, at least.

The coating you want is MR10. Any plastic's supplier should be able to get coated LEXAN. Expect to pay around 300 dollars for a 36" x 60" sheet (enough to do the windshield). Use 1/4" for the windshield.
You can save some money by getting non-coated rear and side windows. 150 dollars should buy you an 8x4 sheet of the noncoated stuff. -Duncan |

Most sanctioning bodies require 3/16" MINIMUM thickness for a windsheild. The problem is that 3/16" thick lexan from most sources is slightly on the thin side, making it illegal.

FWIW, I wouldn't replace the glass with LEXAN on a daily driver.

But probably 3 times the price of decent aftermarket glass.

Side note:
I used some large lexan plates to shield some electrical stuff on a design I did at work and we ran into a issue with the Loctite used to hold the fasteners causing the lexan to develop cracks around the mounting holes. Evidently this is common when the two come in contact. |

yea i also read not to use rivets for that reason too. it seems that the self locking nuts (the ones with the plasticy stuff on the end) are the ones u wanna go with.
