Default Anyone racing on BFG g-force R1's?

From my understanding, this is a fairing new addition to the R compound mix. They seem to have better sizes than the 710's. How do they compare to 710, Hoosier, etc?

What type of use do you have planned for them? That will dictate the kind of feedback I can give.

I haven't tried them but from what I've heard they are a great road course tire. I think the closest tire to compare them to would be the Hankook C71. Definitely more grip than a shaved R888, NT01, etc. but maybe just a hair short of the Hoosier R6.

Good prices, TireRack says they were faster on two of their test cars (RSX and Mustang) when compared directly to the Hooser R6....and quoted to wear much better than the Hoosier. The BFG-R1 also won SSB if I recall.

Well for me it will be road racing, track use only, and the size I'm planing to get is 275/35/18

BFG R1's is one of the fastest tires out there. Few years back, the EVO that AMS dominated the Redline Time Attack series was on the BFG R1's the whole season.

Don't forget that they do run 1 size bigger too if you decide to get them. So, I usually run 275's on the Hooiser but in BFG, I would need to run 265's since they are that wide.

well my current setup now isthe 265/36/18 Toyo R1R which has section width of 10.7"... The 275/35/18 BFgoodrich R1 has section width of 10.9", which is only .1" wider than the R1R on either side which i think i have the clearance for with my current wheel setup, so why not try it?

You can try it but I had a set of Hooiser R3S05's in 275/35/18 and a set of BFG R1's in 265/35/18 and when I put those to together to measure the width, they were identical. I would call TireRack to double check with someone there to be 100% sure but, that what I saw from my own eyes and I couldn't believe it. Maybe I had to much to drink that previous night...

The BFG's have a bit wider shoulders. Maybe that's what account for it?

I ran the 265-18 on my RX-8 at a track event. They worked really good, great grip and you could push them very hard without them going off from heat. They did take a lap to come in when cold.

I saw Lee's SSB Honda at the Runoffs, and his tires still looked good after the race, the same was not true for some other brands. Seems like they are great for heavy cars, very durable, but I doubt they are as fast as a V710 or A6.

I ran on them for the first time at the 25 Hours of Thunderhill last month on an H1 car. I didn't get to see any of the tire data, but from a drivers perspective, I was impressed. The grip was superior to the toyos we normally run, which I expected. But the consistency of the tire over a 4 hour stint was the welcome surprise. I don't think we even rotated the first new tire in until hour 8, and the drivers never complained.

We are saving the best take-offs to put on the car again for Redline in March.

They are great if you want a tire that has good grip and a long life. I didn't notice a drop in grip until about 4 heat cycles, at which point the lost about 1 second on a 70 second course.

Bringing this back to the top... I haven't auto-x'd the Subie in a couple years, but this year I'll be getting back into the DC Region auto-x scene. Right now I've got a set of V710s on my auto-x wheels - those date back to at least 2006, if not 2005, so they're a bit tired, I imagine. Right now they're on a moving van heading from WA to VA, so I can't really look at them to see how bad off they are.

Are the R1s any good for auto-x use, or are they really more oriented towards open track/road race use? I don't hope to be very competitive, but it would be nice to have good tires so I'm not completely out of my league. In my 225/50-15 size the R1s are on close-out at Tire Rack for just $168 each, while V710s are $194 each.

Thanks,
Pat Olsen

Patrick, the R1s will not come up to operating temp fast enough for auto-x. They might be better than some street tires but nowhere near an A6. I have raced on the BF's for a long time now and while they're great tires they aren't good for short blasts.

I tracked my bugeye on a set of R1s last season and they were great. The shoulders are pretty square so I don't doubt that they may run a bit wide. They stick much better and wear a lot longer than the Yokohama A048's they replaced. I really liked these tires as far as slicks go, but I don't believe they warm up quick enough for autocross.

The R1 owners manual talks about Autocross versus track use.

Thanks, guys, I guess I'll just pick up another set of V710s.

That's a pretty cool little owner's manual that BFG created.

Michelin has a good users manual too. It's a little more advanced for road racing.
