Why does Mitsu call them 'vortex generators' then???

We like to call that "specmanship". In essence they are talking about a realistic 1.5% reduction in coefficient of drag which of course might or might not have a positive effect depending on speed of the vehicle..
A proper vortex is created through a leading edge that is bluff or "squared" in appearance. Then the number of vortices created is proportional to the velocity of air flow past the VG. The problem with using this model as mentioned in Mitsu's paper is it creates more drag than it cures. I can see that they have optimized the size of the VG's to suit their purpose (using the delta style) but what I believe in essence they are trying to do is create slight turbulence to minimize air separation while not creating reverse flow, i.e. vortices... Specmanship is however always a matter of opinion. Good paper though. I was interested in seeing their thoughts on this... Maybe it's the same argument people have about the STi wing.... whoops, another can of worms... |

The purpose of the Mitsu VG's isn't to reduce drag, IIRC, it's to delay flow separation and provide cleaner airflow to the wing.
No purpose for that on a wagon. If you like the style though.... |

You mean the vorterx generator on the EVO isn't so create a vortex so it can beat a Subaru by creating a vortex for the following car to disappear into?
Anyways, I think that the carbon spoiler on the legacy was very nice, but might be a bit too much for your average wagon if it didn't have other aero pieces to balance it out. |

uhm thanks for searching? To add some input. I've seen a voltex(not vortex) wing on a legacy wagon . Properly mounted too. Somewhurr in the jdm thread.
