Exclamation Fuel cut problem, help!

Ever so often now as I'm driving my RS, notably during deceleration and engine-braking, my fuel cuts and the engine kills. I'm able to turn it over again after a couple tries after giving it a little gas. After that it runs like nothing ever happened. This seems to happen only once everytime I take the car out, then doesn't happen again. Everything on the meters read normal: no knock detected, no abnormal EGT, no stutter before it happens. The only thing out of the ordinary is the AF meter seems to go off the lean side right when it happens, thus my theory of fuel cut.

While this problem is only a major annoyance at this point I don't want it to get any worse. Setups include a Hyper-R SFC fuel controller, Walbro fuel pump, and an old fuel filter. I plan on replacing the fuel filter out of general principal, but wondering if anyone else has any ideas regarding this problem.

Thanks!
~Garrett

It sounds like the fuel pump is being starved... does this happen mostly when declerating and around corners, especially with a less than full tank of gas?

You may be getting too much fuel... what are your fuel pressures like?

Indeed the problem does seem to be occuring only on deceleration. The one time it happened at high speed there was no change in attitude, however. It was shortly after filling the gas tank that it happened. These other times seem to happen on half tank or less fuel situations.

And as for getting too much fuel I don't have a fuel pressure gauge installed... yet

But isn't there a recirculator for unused fuel that sends it back to the tank? I know this has been occuring at lower revs but the fuel controller doesn't start adding fuel until about 4k rpm.

Solutions?

Well the thing is, if you get off the accelerator there is still a split second where the ECU is sending the higher amount of fuel to the engine and if your fuel pressure is too high, you could drown out the engine and stall it. I suggest if you get a fuel pressure guage and it reads over 43 or so psi at idle, to get yourself a used fuel pressure regulator out of an old SVX or XT6. They'll snap right on (minus getting a longer hose for it) and they'll lower it to around 32-33psi at idle - where it should be.

Default MAF??

Ok now the engine won't run with the MAF plugged in. So now it is either the MAF that is shot or there is a fatal problem with the FPR. With the MAF plugged in it will turn over, run for a couple seconds, then taper off and die. I unplugged the MAF and limped it home and it ran fine (well as fine as it can in limp mode). The MAF was just replaced about 4000 miles ago so I hope it isn't that. Could some other system be causing the engine to just die like that only when the MAF is plugged in?

How much do you think a dealer could troubleshoot a problem like this? I'm thinking if it is the MAF I'll find out how much a case of MAF sensors would cost, maybe I can get a deal in bulk

Or how tough is a MAF to MAP swap? Does it just entail an ECU from a model with a MAP and the sensor? Or should I just scrape up some money and buy a Tech II? Any help would be appreciated...
