Hi Guys,
We have the parts and our engineers will be taking a close look at them next week.

If you want to be put on a distribution list for updates on this kit, please email me at [email protected]. Please put "STI BBK" in the subject line. Thanks.

I don't see a real need for a rear kit for many of the trackday cars out there - if you have a Subaru track car that NEEDS a rear brake upgrade then we might expect this would not be the front kit to go with. The park brake adds a bunch of complexity and cost to any kit and the rear STi brakes hold up pretty well.

It's a BBK

Big Brake Kit - no not really
Bling Brake Kit - definitely not
Budget Brake Kit - no - not that either.

Better Brake Kit - in some cases hopefully so. For example - Paul's front calipers are pretty much toast after about 12-14 events. They were worth $800 or whatever prior to tracking the life out of them. Those are parts we might not expect to ruin so fast and they could have been sold/saved for use for what they are good at.

Again - the idea is to only add features that are known to improve performance on track while trying to keep consumable costs/intervals as low as possible.

At least we get to go to the track to test it - what could be more fun than that.

And Carolina Motorsports Park eats brakes at an amazing rate.
I'd love to see a rear BBK for the 05-07 STI with 2 piece rotor and still retaining the parking brake. I don't see myself buying this as front BBK since it's smaller than a Stoptech 355mm bbk. If all factors like quality are equally matched, rotor size makes a very big difference.

Sounds like a very nice setup. I was reading the marketing material on Essex's site and there was a little blurb about dust boots.

Quote:
Benefits:

The CP8350's resilient high temperature seals allow the caliper to run longer at elevated temperatures between service intervals. That means fewer leaky calipers and less frequent rebuilds. Unless you plan on driving through dirt, debris, or road salt in your track car, dust boots are pointless. Even if you do plan on driving your car in these environments, dust boots will almost immediately become burned and brittle on the track, and can even create a melted mess on the back of your brake pads. The remnants of the boots can actually get pulled down into the caliper on the sides of the pistons, potentially damaging your seals. Friends don't let friends drive track cars with dust boots.
So what are your thoughts on using these on a daily driver? I'm living back in Germany now and driving on the Autobahn can be pretty similar to some track days with numerous 250 km/h to 60 stops one after the other. I would also be using these on the Ring, Hockenheim, etc. as well. Do you think one of AP's regular "Street" 4 pot offerings would be a better solution for a car seeing 4 seasons? What additional maintenance would you suggest or foresee for this setup on a DD rather than pure track car?

A new rear AP Racing system is in the works. It will retain the parking brake.

The AP Racing street legal kit's do just fine on the Ring.

We currently use the 362mm 6pots ... with DS 1.11's RC6 for the rear.

So far 2 years and no need for rebuild.

thanks Viperguy!

I want to run 17"'s so sticking with one of their smaller 4 pot kits. Actually also thinking of using their 16" 305mm kit. I'm back and forth about staying with 16"s or going to 17"s. Though I assume I need some ducting if I stay 16"? Anyway, that's OT. So, carry on!

Stillen is working with AP Racing on this. It requires a special caliper version, so it is taking a bit longer than originally planned.

Paging Jeff Ritter!
Hi guys,
We've been making some forward progress on our STI kit. We are currently doing some final work on our Lancer Evo kit, and the STI kit will be hot on its heels. We are going to the track next week to do some testing with the Evo.

The main reason I post this is because these two cars are obviously quite similar. This kit clears the OEM 17" Evo wheels by a country mile...something like 8mm clearance to the wheel spoke, and plenty of barrel clearance on the wheel. I expect the OEM STI wheels will have no clearance issues. The AP Racing CP8350 caliper is more compact than the OEM Brembo unit. It also weighs far less. I'll take some weights and snap a few pics shortly.

As for a rear kit, yes Essex is indeed planning to make a rear kit using AP Racing competition parts.

In the meantime, here are some pics of the front kit installed on our test evo:

I stuck a standard house key in there to show the space on this one:

I just took some weights on the AP Racing bits vs. the OEM STI parts.

OEM caliper (includes mounting bracket) = 8.2 lbs.
OEM front replacement disc (Centric brand pillar vane...very similar to stock)= 22.4 lbs.
OEM sized pads= 5.4 lbs.
Total OEM brake package= 36.0 lbs. per front corner

AP Racing CP8350 caliper with mounting bracket= 5.6 lbs. (caliper without bracket is 4.8 lbs.)
AP Racing CP3908 Heavy Duty racing disc with Evo floating hat installed (STI should be almost identical)= 17.6 lbs.
Largest pad available that will fit in the CP8350 caliper= 4.8 lbs.
Total AP Racing brake package= 28 lbs.

Difference = 8 lbs. less unsprung weight per corner, or 16 lbs. total off the nose of the car.

OEM components

AP Racing bits

Same here, really looking forward to putting these on my car. I run 17" wheels and I didn't want to get 18" wheels just to allow better brakes. I feel like a kid before christmas.

Hi Guys,
I've had a number of Evo customers ask me if brake ducting would work with our AP kit, so I figured many folks here would be wondering the same thing. As mentioned before, I expect the STi setup to be very similar. The ducts nest up into the bracket beautifully.

J Ritt, would you be someone to speak to about purchasing AP Racing calipers, not the ones from this kit specifically?

Still working on it. We're just about ready to go live with Evo sales. STI kit is next up.
