Default Replacement Windshield.

There's a huge chip on my windshield and it needs replaced.

Originally the glass shop gave me the option of Carlex or UnitedLN. I looked on my car and the side windows are Carlex so thats what we decided.

They called back and said Carlex is not in stock anywhere.

Any other brands I should request? What is the factory Subaru glass?

I work for an auto glass company, trust me on this. Make sure you get OEM glass, ask if they carry Pilkington or PPG brand glass. Don't use that aftermarket **** from Safelite, Coast to Coast etc... OEM glass is 1/4" thick as apposed to aftermarket which is only 1/8th and they usually don't come with factory molding so you'll have leaking/delamination etc.

I ordered the Pilkington based on the above recommendation.

+1 for Pilkington or PPG glass over others. Also make sure to get all of the foolish Subaru installed plastic guides out out of the original sealent and windshield frame. I feel that those are the culprit of many factory installed winshields with cracks originating from the edges.
If you are super picky like me remove your wipers and the plastic cowl trim before you go to the glass shop. Have them R&R the glass. If you have some touchup paint see if they will let you touch up any scratches in the window frame that they might made with their tools. Rust sucks went it starts from a place you cannot get to after the winsdshield is already in place.
Then reinstall the cowl trim yourself afterwards. Some glass shop dingbat will try to wedge the new glass in under the cowl trim and screw up the trim clips or crack the new windshield. Theirs is not the right way to do it....but I guess it is the easier profit-minded way?? Also denatured alcohol works wonders on removing non-cured windshield sealent, it cannot hurt to have some handy just in case.

any good installer should remove the cowl trim but you're right some don't to try and rush the job....which is a big reason for leaking etc.

Call your insurance company and ask them for a list of preferred shops in your area.

I just had my windshield replaced on Friday by a Glass America installer. He was nice and did a fair job, and I asked for either Pilkington or PPG based on Nasioc comments and elsewhere. However, PPG Auto Glass is now PGW, which is what I got, and the piece is TERRIBLE! Very wavy and distorted in several areas. When driving, the white line on the side of the road looks like a zig-zag.

I'm calling Glass America Monday to see what I can do. They were right around the same price as Safelite, but unlike Safelite, GA agreed to use Pilkington or PPG glass. Cost was $240 (out of pocket discounted price), although in three different phone calls to them I never got the same price twice...

I mean no disrespect to either of you suggesting this method, but don't you think that:

a) If I call and tell GA the truth, they'll replace it because the piece is obviously of poor quality, and they should stand behind their work.
b) If I try your method and GA decide to be sticklers and scrutinize my claim, I could get caught and be SOL or at the very least they drag the process out while they 'review' it.
c) There's no way around it - what you're suggesting is fraud. I'm not a goody two-shoes, but I'd only go that way if they already screwed with me/forced my hand, and even then two wrongs don't make a right, and in this case I'd be the first Wrong.

All that said, I thought PPG (now PGW) was one of the two safe bets, so I think I just got a bad piece and they'll recognize that and swap it out.

A glass break from a bump looks way different from a smash. I expect a better response from you mmmmk?

LOL break it? really...I've only worked in the auto-glass business for a year now and even I can tell the difference between something hit the windshield and someone smashed the windshield.

Sorry that it looks wavy out of your glass, maybe you got a poorly made piece, call them back. Just FYI, they're gonna hassle you, that $200+ you paid, 80% of that is cost for the installer/materials. I've gotten price quotes on my own windshield for ****s and giggles and Pilkington glass can be bought by a shop for near $80. They're gonna bitch and tell you it's fine until you bitch back enough they come out and fix it.

+1 for ppg, in my 10 plus years in auto industry, they're the way to go if ur not gonna go OEM.
I'm gonna get mine from the dealer for many reasons though:
1. Windshield wiper defroster
2. Yes, I want the subaru emblem on the windshield
3. I can get it wholesale

If your as peculiar as I am, you may want to go OEM.

I called GA Monday morning and told them the piece they installed last Friday was distorted. Without hesitation, she overnighted a new piece, a Pilkington, and the installer came today (Tuesday) and put in the new piece. No charge, no trouble, no fuss. In fact, I mentioned to the installer that I'm doing some maintenance soon (timing belt, UP and DP install, etc.) and he offered to help me and use his shop and tools, as I live in an apartment with no garage.

I think the point of this, and you can read into it what you want beyond what I type here, is that if everybody only returned items in an honest manner, we'd rarely have to worry about getting screwed or hassled by retailers and installers. The reason people do get screwed and hassled is because of all the people that return items in a dishonest manner or try to manipulate return policies, warranties, insurance, etc. to their benefit.

Does anyone have experience with the Pilkington vs. PPG(PGW) glass. Which of these two has a better fit for a GD, esp. a 2007 Sti? I'm leaning on getting the PGW.

Also, the front Sti screen is not heated right?

Thanks in advance.

I have pgw on my '12 wrx, installed by safelite. No issues. The wiper heaters are black instead of the stock ugly orange.

I have had two Pilkingtons and they have been of good quality. I have seen PGWs that also look good. Either way you are probably in good shape, still worth looking over the glass before they start cutting out yours. The only heated windshields were WRX Limiteds with the cold weather group. The 2007 STI Limiteds might have had it as well but no standard STIs had that as an option.

I recently had safellite replace my oem windshield after it started to crack real bad from rock chips in the past. They charged $340 and Idek what class it was but not even 26 days later the tiniest rock in the world hit my window on the highway and it cracked all the way down AGAIN. That's 2 windshields I've been through in 2 months which is ridiculous.
