Call in dead. Works like a charm.

"Hi, it's snyper. I'm not going to make it in tomorrow."

"Oh, why is that?"

"I'm dead."

"Dead?"

"Yup, that's right. Dead. I'll be alive by Monday."

Edit: Oh yeah, say "toodles" before you hang up. People like that word. Promise.

I wouldn't use the death in the family card, easy to call you out on that. When my dad died while I was in college, I had a prof ask me to bring in an obituary. I think, when I told him I would, he was like (keano voice on) "woah".

Just make sure your employer doesn't pull the old "bring in a doctor's note" on you.

Death in the family.

Just call your boss' voice mail real early in the morning, like 6:30am and leave a message saying, "My uncle in <insert some state> passed away last night so I'll be in <insert some state> today, sorry."

I've done that before.

Well, one of my former co-workers used this one:

He told us he was stuck in traffic all night and then ran out of gas while stuck in traffic. His cell-phone was dead, and no one pulled over to help out or called a tow-truck. So he ended up walking many miles until he got home. By the time he got home, it was like 3AM. So he was really tired and couldn't come to work the next day. Hahahaha.. that was just hilarious!

Tell 'em there's a radio-active, rabbid baboon living in your attic. It's gonna take you all weekend to get rid of him.
