Post awful smell coming from my exhaust

today my friend followed me and pointed out that a awful smell was coming from it...

it smells like a musty swamp....sulfur like i guess.....but it smells awful...what is the problem

also my gas mileage what fallen from 260 per tank to about 210 per tank....what happened...

sounds like your cat is overheating, that is most likely the cause of the sulfur smell.

Space, don't worry about it. It's the sulfir thats in the gasoline. Nothing you can do about it, and nothing's wrong with your car. I brought mine to the dealer cause I was getting that very rotten egg smell out the tail pipe, and after they checked it, they said it was fine. Also, I just stared working for a SAAB dealer, and the other day I drove a 01 9-3 turbo, and it smelled like that too, when I got off the car. Believe me, there is nothing wrong with the car.

spacecowboy,

Try using a better grade of fuel.
Some gas has more sulfer content then others.

Stations like Sunoco sell gas that is lower in sulfer. Give them a try, you should get better gas milage and the problem should disappear.

oh boy....the sunoco station where i live, the owner is going to jail...switching gas in the tanks....

i'll try a different grade....i hate to pay for the price increase though...

oh anyone experience loss of gas mileage....

Perhaps Shell fuel can work too.

As far as I know, stations like BP and Citco have a tad more sulfer than the other big names. Id also stay away from the private "mom and pop" gas stations.

nothing but esso (exxon?) texaco and shell (93oct) on my Si... of course , that car had to be 91 or higher gas, so i babied it in that sense....

you can try higher octane/quality gas.. or if not take it to warranty man
