Question Aftermarket suspension for an STi

In addition to new rubber, it looks as though the rear struts are screwed and need replacement, and Richmond Subaru in fact recommended going aftermarket vs. buying stock as it would be more cost effective to get new for all wheels for the same price as just the rears...

Does anybody have recommendations as to the best manufacturer?

Have looked into both Tein and H&R entry level coilover systems (adjustable height only) both for a similar price.

Also, does anyone run Hancook rubber? Trying to avoid the $1,200 plus tax shafting for the Potenzas and these have been recommended by a tuner garage.

Any thoughts are welcome at this stage ...

Are you looking for all season, summer or winter tires?

If you're looking for summer tires, I've been VERY happy with my Falken Azenis RT-615s

At this point, I am opting for all out performance rubber, will consider winter tires down the road. How much are a set of those bad boys?

You will like the RS2s more than the RT615s, especially since they're on close out at Tirerack.

As they start to wear, the RS2s will grip better and won't be as fun in the rain.

edit: however, if you can find a set of barely used RE070s, I'd get those instead.

The price is good for sure. They seem to get good reviews. I guess its smart to wait to get the tires and suspension done at once and then have the alignment done. The saga continues.

EDIT: Do Tirerack deliver to Vancouver?

By the time I am done, I will pretty much have a new '04 STi

I'm not sure if they ship to Canada.. A lot of folks on here ship to either Pt Roberts or Blaine for tires.

By the time you're done, you're gonna have a fun STI

Suspension wise, make a stop at Dale's Alignment.. but you may leave spending more than you anticipated. LOL

buy my KW V3 coilovers, it's the LAST coilover you'll need to buy and you can save on shipping/taxes blah blah and stuff.

oh did I mention they have less then 1000 km on em. And by less means it's most likely much less.

Woot!
I run the RCE Tarmac II's which are a slightly nicer version of the KW V3.
(teehee. That's going to get me in trouble)

They are probably the best coilover system I've run. If you're not into coilovers, Ohlin struts and some Racecomp springs will set you right.

I'm kind of restricted in spending right now following the already extensive list of work that I have had done recently. I will likely get the entry level Tein or H&R set up. The K3 V3s sound awesome, and I would like to go for these, but with new rubber needed to remedy the "torque bind" due to cupped rear tires, I have already spent my disposable cash for this month and next

Can't go wrong with sticky tires and a stock STI IMO.

I feel your pain moose.
But slowguy has a good point, that the car is fine as it is. Just toss some good tires on there for winter, and save the pennies for the spring thaw.

So just leave the dirty sounding defective rear struts to rot away some more??

Trying to organize the new rubber as we speak ... need to get an alignment done too ... I am numb to the pain now, it was worst at the start trust me haha

I am not numb to my bank arranging to take me out though, so I'm liking the savings talk

relax my man, we won't leave you hanging like that.
Take a gander at this thread, and you'll see how we've been fixing strut clunks since 04'.

http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show...t=clunk&page=2

cheap, and easy to do.
In fact, I have to do mine in the next week or two as the 06' struts clunk too, and I run the stockers in winter.

I like to call credit "reverse savings".
Takes the sting out of payments.

Hey thanks Hypa for the info. I have been reading up about this clunking issue up until today, but not in as much detail as I should have been. It clearly seems like an issue that should have been remedied by Subaru some time ago, but as long as the car can be driven and it will not cause further damage, I try and leave it for when I can afford a more suitable coil over system.

How long does it take you to run the lube on your stock struts? Seeing as though I have limited experience with the STis, I will quadruple and add two hours for an estimate on how long it may take me

And I thought my RX7 was a mission ....

hahaha, you RX7 guys coming over to Subaru, expecting things to be easier.
Ask RX Renesis how that's working out for him.

Really though, it's an easy fix.
I take less than an hour to get the old struts out, lubed, and put back in.
Just use a heavy duty grease, or you'll be doing it again in January.

What yr was your RX7 Mooseman? I had a 93 and I still miss it (unless it was broken).

and Steve, so far it's been much much easier. Case in point- when i had my headlights on and I flipped the left signal on, all my running lights would turn off. LOL.

Not really "coming over" to Subaru lol, just needed some serious performance (with practicality) after three years of driving around a mazda 3 dogpoo, before such time I had a more serious RX7 in the UK. But in the UK you don't need four doors and a roof rack for skis and bikes, you spend all week trying to avoid being put in jail for speeding and then spend the weekend in the pub

Sweet, I will take a look to ascertain whether I can undertake this task myself, or I may well be asking for help

It was a 94 FD from Japan. Rebuilt engine, modded downpipe, Power FC commander, aftermarket wheels etc and tuned at Re:Worx (where they have the UK's fastest RX7) to 310rwhp. I miss it too mine was all in all very reliable and I was gutted to get rid of it, but it paved the way for me to move here. Too bad the next owner (who was a bit of a nutjob from Holland) died of health complications only a few months after buying it. Its prob sitting in a garage in Amsterdam wasting away He had planned to take it 'to the next level' and track it at the Ring.

PS - being booted around the Ring in a 450bhp RX7 by a skilled driver is not a bad way to spend 9 mins of your life

Wow, not bad. Any port work? I put down 315rwhp with a refresh rebuilt, turbos ran nonsequential, 3" dp, mp, catback, a huge stock mount IC (CWR), and of course, a PFC We didn't have anyone locally then who could tune rotaries though.
