Need Help, burning smell coming from my engine
Ok,
So, the other day I was driving..came to a stop light. Waiting for the light to turn green, With the car in neutral, clutch out. Light turns green, I depress clutch fully, car into first.... Car makes this wierd spinning but with bumps in it sound/feeling. Hard to explain really, but as I am not quite a car buff, I can't say it was this or that. Instant burning smell in the cabin. So I thought, that's weird, had to be the clutch...but wait. Get home, turn the engine off, get out of my car...same burning smell coming out from my hood scoop and hood vents. Was like...hmmmm that's weird. Today I get in my car, I'm at my local coffee shop getting some java before work, clutch out, in neutral. The cabin fills with this nasty burning plastic or rubber smell. My car has been doing this with the 1st gear thing on and off since I picked it up about 5k miles ago. Car has 48k miles on it, no other real issues. Had the car in my driveway after work, and did the old: Stop car completely, put car into 3rd, and let out clutch. Car jerked forward and died immediately. Did not roll and keep idealing, so I'm not sure if it IS my clutch. If you guys think it is, Should it be going by now? I have never done ANY clutchdrops or high rev launches. Which kinda weird me out, I have only driven this car the way it should be driven, nothing like I said as far as clutchdrops, etc. If it is time to replace it, what should I replace it with? Something long lasting and tough as hell. I don't wanna have to replace this damn thing every 40 something thousand miles. Any ideas, thoughts? Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. Cheers Will

Clutch- sounds very bad,
Bad already- shouldn't be if you've been driving like grandma. I've heard that spinning sound before on Saturns when the fringers break or have worn or when i install the throw out bearing wrong. |

I'd get it checked out further, but it sounds like a croaked throw out bearing... wait, I'm tired and no tranny specialist to begin with, so don't take my opinion too seriously, but TO bearing is what it seems like.

Any more ideas? I'm not liking the ones I heard so far. No offense guys. Would this be covered under warranty? Cheers Will |

Sounds like it's either clutch or tranny. If it's the clutch it likely wont be covered. If it's the tranny, it likely will be covered provided that your car is stock.

your cars mad at you because it gets made fun of by the other cars in the parking lot for the way you drive it
My car was doing something similar as well as having some issues downshifting to 4th on the highway. Its amazing what a little clutch and assembly will fix. Have it checked out by your local dealership. Its better to fix it than deal with the smell and the one day that it will no longer engage and you have to get it towed. That would suck a lot if you had to get home to go to the bathroom Besides you might find out its just a belt or perhaps a cat that wanted to sleep under the hood. Good luck |

Ok, today it didn't do the 1st gear thing, but still.....once I got to work, the smell was lightly coming out of the engine bay. All the belts and pulleys are in perfect shape. No fluids leaking that I can see. Sooooo..... not quite sure. How does a subaru dealership deal with stuff like this? Do I bring it in, they look at it, and charge me a certain fee?
Would they install a kevlar clutch for me if it is the clutch? And would they (SOA) still cover my tranny under warranty with a performance clutch installed? Cheers Will |

Warranty issues are based on them proving that your aftermarket part CAUSED the problem. I personally can easily see a puck or race clutch being the problem in a trashed tranny. But if its still an organic disc then I would think it would be harder for them to prove. But you said you really dont abuse the car, so if thats the case then there shouldnt be a tranny issue anyhow, right? If you have ever smelled clutch before then you will always remember it Not sure how to describe it to you though. But yea if you bring it in and they smell it they should be able to tell you what it is. Add in some i hear thumpada thump and a richita snap every now and then while driving and they will love you Good luck getting it fixed. There is supposed to be an organic clutch that will hold up to 300hp that you can install but i dont remmember where from. Anyone remmember? Quote:

FYI- The SPO disk shudders like a bitch when it's cold and/or damp out. Especially when you first drive the car in the morning. Ive had one in for a couple of months now.

i had a very similar problem with my car, burning smell from 1st. i had a little smoke too at one point when i lifted the hood. i couldn't figure it out either, and finally broke down and decided to drop it off at subaru. i wrote them a letter explaining when i smelt it and what it smelled like (to me). they checked it out and fixed her up- turns out the o-rings(?) needed to be replaced. that cost me about $450, but i got a bunch of other things fixed as well, so it's obviously lower. that was about a week and a half ago, no problems since. (i think the actual price to replace just the rings was less than $100 with no warranty-the parts guy said if i still had the warranty, part of it MIGHT have been covered). hope that helps

tsfxRS,
Well, that's the reason I need you guys help for this. I don't wanna go in, and get rooked. But I really think this should be under warranty as I haven't done anything obscene to the car. Also, basically, you all are in concensus that the only thing I can get away with without voiding warranty is a organic clutch. Correct? cheers Will |

I think they will void your tranny warranty if you use anything other than a Subaru(or maybe an STi) clutch. And even then, Im sure it would have to be installed by them.

He's only got a short while left on his warrentee.
I'd bring it in and be sure they know you've been good with it. You might be surprised. They might replace the clutch, pressure plate, and throw-out bearing for free. Worst case is you'll have to pay 1/2 diagnosis time if they don't decide to warrentee it...but then you'll know for sure whats wrong. Don't let them take it apart until they KNOW its the clutch. They should be able to tell if its the clutch or not just by driving it. If they dont warrenteeit, you can come to a garage day and install an aftermarket clutch for yourself. |

You guys have been EXCELLENT...really. That's what I love about the I-club and NESIC.
Chris, I would love to do that, however, I am not really mechanically inclined, installing my COBB CAI was like..."YES!!!" I actually did something to my car other than changing the oil! And I wouldn't wanna burned any of you guys with, "So what do I do again?" type stuff. A guy I work with said he replaced a clutch in a subaru once, (he was a Porsche/BMW mechanic before the IT field) and he said you need to pull the engine out to replace it. So, I'm actually REALLY freaking out about this. I would LOVE to learn EVERYTHING about my car, but I can't seem to find any good places that explain what everything is and does. Anyhoo...I'll keep you all posted. I have next week off, so maybe I'll have someone look at it then. Anyone know of a good dealership/ service dept? I bout my car from a subbie dealership in NH, so I need to take it nearby. I live in eastern CT. Thanks again guys Cheers Will |

Anywhoo, if they don't fix it for free, you could have it done at any garage for half the price the dealer charges. |
