I am putting too much thought into this question, any ideas on how to answer it?
The question is:
How would you convice your overhead (managment) who is running a hub-based network (puke) to switch to a switch based network?

well, obviously you would have to present them with a logical proposal.. show them some proof of the positives of what you're trying to do etc etc..
if you do a good job.. they cant refuse that.. -Danny |

Imagine 100 people standing along the walls of a big room, randomly paired up trying to have 50 simultaneous business meetings. A switch gives each pair their own conference room.
That's my two sentence answer. |

security, speed, relability... explain to them things they would understand, like cost savings and productivity increases, etc.

smash all the hubs with a hammer, and then they will have to replace them. explain switches are hammer proof, so they will be FORCED to switch (no pun intended)

yes, but the hubs work fine, and are cheaper. I'd be extremely interested in honest figures on productivity increasing because of a switch (hah!) from a 100 mbit hub... Users that used to wait 4ms for their packets are now only having to wait 2ms... true, it's twice as fast now, but the company's bottom line will not move because of that switch..
However, when you have a consultant that plugs their laptop into the hub, and runs a fairly simple network sniffer, picks up the password of the Approver-role to your Lawson Financial package, and uses it to log herself/himself in, and funnel money out of the company and jet out of there, long before anybody knows anything about it, is a slightly easier case to make. Switch wins. You can't hear your cube-neighbors traffic (unless you specifically allow port monitoring and such; but that's an inside job now.. and a totally different situation). For Sarbanes/Oxley and other random security expectations, it'd only make sense for a company that cares about their financial future to secure their network. The end. |

Additionally, to kick the meeting off, ask who in the group is willing to walk up to the whiteboard and write their username and password down for everyone to see. "This is why hubs are bad. Let's talk about switches." etc.

I'd say run lopht crack on the network in front of your network manager and show him how unsecure hubs are.

Point out that something like 75% of all attacks come from 'insiders,' aka, disgruntled employees. They're already inside the firewall.

Run a sniffer and pick up (1) his banking password (2) his IM conversations (3) the URL's of the porn web sites he is going to and (4) the emails he sends to friends and family or other folks.
Put together a small report, removing references to him, and titled "Network security in a corporate environment." Then pepper the paper with content from the aforementioned sniffing session. Present it to the company. See if he recognizes his material. You might want to throw in some stuff from other people as well... just so you don't get canned by pissing him off! Otherwise... um ... just run something like Kaaza and suck down all the bandwidth all the time. Max out the network with videos or something. |
