One video; 3 others to look at. Worked through photos, only 544, which isn't a lot for me :-\ lighting sucked and so did the snow for getting any more than that. Narrowed down to 282 (pretty much was leaving the button pressed while I was taking photos.) Debating where to upload them but will post up when I do.

I love how Evan drives that Audi 4000, you can always tell he's having fun.

Thanks again Kaitlin!

That last picture with the Evo is kind of epic...

Have 244 photos are uploading!! Cut it down from the almost 600 I managed to take (if it was nicer out there would of been more I'm sure).

Appreciate the shots Amanda.

Curious about the EVOs. Shaggy does your car have a LSD up front or is it open differential?

How about the EVO Todd was driving?

I was also wondering how shaggie seemed to kick his back end out so effortlessly, I need less understeer. Or I just need to slow down more...

lsd all around i woulda had better control if i could read japanize and pull the abs fuse
davin was doing good just slow in the slow bit fast and hard on the gas and with your guys newer fancy stuff you need to drive it harder with momentum and e brake all about getting on the gas as fast as you can after took paul for a ride he was like ya this doesn't drive like a suby..lol maybe that why they won..lol

funny you should mention effort cause i took the camera guy out for a ride and he was like that just stupid how sideways you can get an i pulled the Clarkson one finger maneuver for a while he laughed

I figured it would be smarter to just try and get around the corners using the right speed and throttle. I found shifting into first would help get the back end out when I didn't turn in right, I'll have to try the e-brake next time.

I was actually quite impressed with the guy in the A4 rotating as well as he did.

BTW, keep those of us non-facebookers informed if Hotrod throws up a video pics or an article.

Truer than you know.

Subaru's have an inherent rear bias. EVO's have a front bias on their DCCD.

Last week on Wasilla lake, with water on top of the ice, putting my DCCD in manual with full lock worked great, but we were at very low speeds.

After practicing thursday night, in relatively high traction conditions with good snow cover, I felt fairly confident heading into the event. The car went where I told it. I played with the dccd controller in auto and manual and both worked well. I was still undecided which would work best but was nice to have those options.

In the Sunday morning practice, there was still some tackiness to the track and we weren't allowed to pass so it was impossible to know what was about to happen. Later, with all the cars on the track, the traction went away fairly quick with that many cars packing down the snow and my car began pushing terribly. I began playing with the DCCD controller, trying both auto and manual settings. I went through several dial adjustments on the manual setting, nothing seemed to improve the handling in the corners. I had very little to no front grip. I was having to throttle steer the car. Trying to keep the car off the berms was impossible at the speeds others were able to achieve, so I settled in for a long day.

Things I used to pull off in the WRX/TRBOXR with ease did not work at all with this new NOMAD7 car. I tried weighting the front tires with braking to get the car to turn, I tried different throttle techniques, I tried the scandanavian flick, I tried rocking the wheel back and forth through the corners to find traction, I used the inside, outside and both the fast in, slow out, & slow in, fast out methods. I basically went through my entire arsenal of tricks that have been successful in years' past. Nothing was working.

Couple that with many different types of machines and drivers in the mid-pack. It made for a hair raising experience.

This set up the day for me fighting for position sandwiched between relative newcomers and the less capable 2WD cars. I was trying to give the new folks plenty of room and protect my car but had the fast 2WD guys breathing down my neck. Jammer is always excellent in his Focus and Tank was on my butt multiple times too.

It is tough being out there in your daily driver. You have to be aggressive in a door to door race. Doing that with the vehicle you just dumped a ton of money into that you need to use to get to work on Monday leaves some difficult decisions to be made. As a racer you want to be out there with the others but you know it is a calculated risk. Push one hair over the line and ...you got troubles.

Add in a bunch of fast guys in 2nd, borrowed or loaned out vehicles, who are willing and able to push harder, it becomes even more hair raising. You also have a lot of new guys who are still learning thrown in the mix. I tend to give them plenty of room these days. You never know quite what they are going to do in any given situation. Berm busting exits create quite a bit of smoke cover in an ice race. Starting from the back is a big handicap.

All this being said, I am not saying any of this to make excuses, merely to explain my experience on that day.

This new car is very different from what I used to race with. The combination of twin scroll power, being in boost and spinning on ice at 2600 rpm with an 8000 rpm redline, larger diameter and wider tires from a different manufacturer, shorter ratios of the 6 speed, a front LSD with DCCD control, much stiffer suspension....well, you get the picture. Much more complicated and seemingly more capable vehicle.

My old car had open differentials which while simpler worked better on slick ice at higher speeds. The new car is front LSD which makes the tire on the outside of the turning car try to match the one on the inside and vice versa. This works great when there is traction but as I was to find out, not so great with no traction. It creates a car that wants to go straight or push, called understeer.

The work around for this is to come into the corner at a higher rate of speed, pitch the car in a controlled slide at a high angle to the corner, get back on the throttle easy (esp. with the twin scroll power), get the car drifting then pull the e-brake to open the front differentials, point the car down the straight away and try to find forward traction. It takes supreme control, confidence and bravery. Even then, it is very difficult to do consistently. whew that is a mouthful. It is a skill you have to develop and one which is not in my arsenal as of yet.

Going to head out there again this weekend to put in some seat time and see if I can't work some things out.

Sorry for the length of this….but I thought I would share info and try to explain what I was dealing with.

Hat's off to the EVO's. I've yet to drive one but watching the video of Shaggy coming off the corners without fighting the vehicle and it going where he points it, was pretty telling.
