Cool Wentworth Springs Drive 10/12/03

Date
Based on the poll responses, I chose the Sunday, October 12th as our date.

Time & Start Location
Since this is a Sunday, I'd like to leave as early as possible to avoid the Sunday drivers. Let's meet at the same place as last time - behind the Unocal on Greenback & Auburn-Folsom Road in Folsom. 8:00am departure time (unless too many of you bitch and moan). Gas up at the Unocal because it's going to be a fairly long drive.

Propsed Course
We'll head out through Folsom to Salmon Falls Road (umm) to HWY49 and then to Wentworth via HWY193. Read up on the attached link.

Road
http://www.pashnit.com/roads/cal/WentworthSpringsRd.htm

Lunch
My original idea was to enjoy the drive and stop for a picnic lunch out at Icehouse. We can work out those details in this thread. Let me know what you think.

What to bring
I'll have 2 Motorola radios just like last time. If anyone else has some, please bring them. Pack a lunch or snacks, depending on what we decide about stopping for lunch along the way.

Purpose
This is intended as the last big drive of the good weather season for us Sac folks (and anyone else that wants to come). It is not a race. We are just going to have some fun and enjoy the open road. There is no experience requirement. Everyone should drive at their own pace. Don't worry, we won't leave you behind. We'll most likely stop for lunch at a predetermined spot and any stragglers will be able to catch up then.

Starting point directions
As stated above, we'll head out from the parking lot behind the Unocal at Greenback and Aurburn-Folsom Road in Folsom.

From HWY50
Folsom Blvd exit off HWY50
Head North (away from the car dealerships)
Stay on Folsom Blvd.
The Unocal is on the corner just after you cross the New Folsom Bridge.

From I-80
You can take Greenback off I-80, but it's a lengthy, traffic light filled drive. You're probably better off taking I-80 to DOuglas Blvd in Roseville.
Douglas Blvd. exit
Head East towards the lake.
Go about 8 miles through Roseville and Granite Bay
Right on Auburn-Folsom Road
The Unocal will be on your right about 3 miles after the dam

See you all there. Let me know if I missed anything.

Leaving at 8 would make us reach the lake too early for 'lunch', but whatever

I thought about that as I was reading my post. I'd prefer no traffic to lunch myself, but let's see what everyone else thinks.

Switch weekends with someone at work! It is a requirement of any Sac drive to have at least one Sonic Yellow WRX. Don't you know the rules?

At risk of offending those who have yet to read the thread, perhaps we should try to keep the group a little smaller than the Mosquito Ridge trip. That was just too many all at once.

If we end up with a lot of Subies, we'll break up into a couple of smaller groups and space them apart by a few minutes. We don't need any unnecssary attention.

Then a yellow car probably is not the answer

I like early starts and 08:00 seems ideal - it's early enough to avoid non-subies out for a leisurely Sunday drive, but late enough to lose the sun in your eyes as it comes over the horizon and between your sun visors syndrome. Don't make me put an even larger piece of cardboard across my windshield.

If our other drivers would like to start later, that's okay with me, too - I'm up for this drive no matter what time we get started.

Should we each bring a folding chair for our picnic brunch? I also have a fairly clean tarp that I use for camping that folks can park their butts on. I can supply Gatorade® enough for all, but I don't have a cooler large enough to keep them iced down.

Were you going all the way up to Ice House resevoir? Just checking, cause if not the other resevoir on Wentworth Springs is a great place to stop. In fact, you guys should stop there anyway just to stop cause its a good stoping spot

Hey I am in! We probably wont leave at 8:00 am sharp anyways, and if we make a quick stop (bathroom??) along the way lunchtime at Icehouse would be feasable. I will bring my camera and gf so this time I will focus on getting more pictures and not going so fast, as my re92's are starting to blow chunks!! :-) See you there!!

Not really ... you can do the trip in around 2 hours, and you can get to ice house around 70-80 minutes. So unless your bathroom break consists of you having to go #2 for 2 hour or so ...

And we ARE leaving at 8. Not an hour after the meeting time this time.

Amen. Be gassed up and ready to go at 8am.

Since we'll be too early for lunch, maybe we'll just stop at the resevoir to take pics and bs for a bit. We can always stop for lunch on the way back to Sac. Maybe we'll just BBQ at my house afterwards (about 5 minutes from the meeting spot).

Sorry, another time perhaps. That's a long trek for a drive of this length... unless you were heading up to Tahoe or Reno for the rest of the day and into Monday.

Negative Z,

As long as you have brakes you'll be fine. With more cars the speeds will be a little slower and the distances beween cars can be kept farther apart as well. That way you can go at your own pace and just use the brakes when you need them. When you're following someone a high speeds and you are fairly close you tend to use the brakes more. But if you're just cruz'n at your own pace, and not tailgating, you won't be braking as hard. Plus you can do some smooth down shifting and use your tranny a bit more as Kosta stated.

OMG, when we get to the wentworth springs and ice house intersection, we gotta turn around and ride back about 10 miles to drive wentworth springs westward. Everyone must experience this. I just went back and forth on that twisty part today 4 times, going west is even more awesome than going east on that road I also did ice house road to 50 and back

The whole trip took me 4 hours

Ive thought about doing that every time I drive wentworth, but I never seem to have the time Although I worry about my car, the altitude, and that incline up those curves

hey. whats up folks. my name is eric. i have owned my wrx for about three months. i had a nice 2001 1.8t wolfsberg jetta until it had an untimely meeting with a concrete wall along the cap city freeway. anyway, i have looked at this route through satellite images in the past and thought of cruising it myself. but if you all have room for one more, im down. i live in orangevale so it would be no problem to hook up by 8am. whats up with cops along the way?

You're more than welcome to come out and join us!

You should also come by our Saturday night meets out at the Togo's on Truxel (there's a sticky at the top of the BAIC).
