Default VIDEO HOW TO: Washing with Optimum No Rinse ONR

Finally finished the edits here, and youtube finally took the upload. Sorry about the audio on it, its the beater camera for around wet areas. I really do articulate "s" sounds in person . There is a dust spec on the sensor as well..

Here is a mini instructional on how to wash with Optimum No Rinse wash, which a lot of you know I am a huge proponent of. It shows the basic washing and drying techniques(lightest pressure needed, pat drying before a final drying pass etc...) I always talk about on the forums here, and shows how powerful of a cleaning ONR is and how quick it is to wash and dry a panel (and add protection).

The same rules apply when washing vehicles that are less dirty, as well as the warmer, cleaner seasons.

In the video its quite cold(hand color is a fair indicator ) so is facial numbness, so its a real world scenario of what a lot of people are faced with come winter when they want to make sure their vehicle safely gets through winter.

The vehicle owner doesn't mind me saying the vehicle was disgustingly filthy.

As I always say to everyone, common sense dictates whether or not you need to pre-rinse the vehicle, in winter it is always a good idea however I wanted to show really how effective ONR is and how safe it is because I think a lot of people think ONR is really limited to what it can clean.

Material list:
2 bucket method with 2 grit guards
Optimum No-Rinse 1 oz per 2 gallons of water with about 4 gallons of solution for this particular vehicle.
Optimum Spray Wax
OID and ONR as a pre-treat (in a spray bottle)
AutoGlos SuperFATT drying towel
AutoGlos Super Plush Polishing towel for Optimum spray wax application.

Enjoy !

It was surprised at the first light swipe how clean it came.. and this is why I love this stuff, that car was filthy

As a side note I had to refill my rinse water once because of how bad it got.

Thanks a lot Tony. I try to keep things real-world to really show people what things are capable of.

Its pretty easy to clean already clean wheels or ONR an already pretty clean car, I wanted everyone to really see what this stuff can do because literally sometimes people have no choice but to consider ONR.

I purposely I try to play an active role on here to teach everyone the whys and hows of caring for their cars as opposed to just spamming products for sale and I felt like that was a perfect opportunity to show on a white car how good ONR is(and safe).

I think pat drying is a good thing especially when you have thick nap towels - waffle weaves, out of the 100s I have tried have really only pushed water around, so I would bet if I tried patting it dry with one it would just spread the water out instead of absorbing it.

geez about time you came out with a video mike

didn't know about this pat dry method but it makes perfect sense, will use it during my next ONR wash.

on your OID & ONR mix, is it just the same 1oz to 2 gal mixture of ONR?

btw drove to jersey friday night, got got in a hail storm, luckily no damage but car is dirty as hell. this car has no luck!

great video to show those non-believers.

Yea i know, I figured I had to keep it real so instead of fluff how-to I decided to make something I hoped would be really useful because I know how much I advocate the use of ONR when options are limited.
Hands were so cold but I figured if I wore gloves some people would suspect using pressure to get it clean and gloves "masking" the pressure.

Glad to hear the car made it unscathed - I know what you've been through with this thing.

To answer your question, I had about 3/4 of an inch left in the bottle of just OID mixed 3:1 with water that I used as clay lube on another car. So I just put a little less than 1/2 of an ounce of ONR and filled it to the top with water. I just didn't want to waste anything and figured it would benefit it otherwise - I was really surprised by how sick it was while cleaning vs ONR only pre-spray

Also, I'd like to see some detailed before and after shots of a black car using ONR- proving it doesn't damage the paint in ANY way..

I'd be happy to do that for you, the only challenge for me would be to find a section that didn't come pre-swirled or scratched...

I was - the difference in temp creates a nasty gradient and for those who are familiar with mpemba effect know that warm warm heads cold QUICKLY. Similar to rolling a ball down a steep hill and 1 ball down a not so steep hill - the steephill(warm water) ball reaches the bottom(freezing or at least cold) faster.. Same idea.

So keep this in mind when washing in winter - hot water sometimes freezes faster than cold water. Mpemba effect.

You got it, but this would have to take place over weeks. To make things really cut and dry, I will have photograph a dark car in good shape after wash(so dirt doesnt hide swirls) and then show the same car after an ONR wash(assuming the same customer comes to me in a reasonable amount of time).

Also, I will return your question with asking: do normal washes cause zero paint damage in any way? Or does everything come down to technique assuming high quality gear? It think you would agree based on a lot of the damage hack shops and volume shops do, that they probably don't use ONR and they still swirl the daylights out of paint.

Awesome vid Mike!

I still can't believe how great ONR works, and it makes washing in my garage during winter enjoyable.

I need to order some drying towels from you. I am really unhappy with the waffle weave towels I'm currently using. Shooting you a pm now.....

I use this exact technique on my OBP STi and it works like a champ!

Had some swirling issues because of my own improper technique, but not I pre-spray with ONR and rinse more frequently... no problem.

Get in touch with Mike and he will hook you up with a GREAT winter/indoor setup!

Mike, awesome video! so glad I found this. definitely picked up a few good techniques. I haven't had a chance to fully try out all the stuff I got from you, just 2 quick washes. Looking forward to my next wash, hopefully with some daylight so I can take good pictures.

Also that optimum spray way is sick. Mike sold me onr along with the wax, I did a full wax of collinite 845 before the winter and every time i clean my car i follow up with the optimum spray wax. i can actually dry my car by driving it down the road because the beading is unreal. It also applies really easy too not like some spray waxes that you have to keep rubbing in.

I was really surprised after the very first swipe how clean it was.... it was so clean it was dryable. Obviously a testament to the protection we put on the vehicle months prior but also showing the cleaning encapsulation of ONR
