Smile Engine Builder in LA/OrangeCo for Miata

Well the next project car is up and ready for work. I need some suggestions if anyone here would have some as to where a good shop is for this. Anyone with good experience or references please respond. I'm looking for a strong build with serious boost applications in mind.

Let me be clear I am trying the gay car board, just looking to support those that support our local area. But thanks for the suggestion. I will keep checking my post on the miata board...they just aren't as helpful usually though. Plus I figured some of you would have a lead on a good shop for compact car engine rebuilding.

Brainstorm is out---I have heard way too much negative about them from people on Nasioc I don't want to be the next in line for that flogging.

Maybe it's because they're all out shopping for shoes or something. Drop in a 20B.

Brainstorm specializes in Miatas. I went there when the good subaru tech was working there (I forgot his name) and they were great. Now he is gone. I went there the other day and they were horrible. The staff there either doesn't know anything, or they just didnt feel like helping me. When I asked them a question about a downpipe he said its better to just buy a full turboback than asking people about seperate components.

I just wanted to get that off my mind.

Yeah the Brainstorm stories seem to be pretty uninspiring as far as confidence goes. I won't go there for engine work, or tuning.

I don't want a wild swap...I already have an insane Legacy wagon, I need the miata rebuilt so I can run a Carb legal kit with the link and goodies and still not get hassled by the man.

Its a shame, because its such a nice looking shop. I drove by yesterday and saw a ferarri in the showroom.

If that's the case then you probably won't be running serious boost.

Are you going s/c or turbo? 1.6 or 1.8?

I've had a bunch of reccomendations for places by FM and goodwin, but i can't think of any off the top of my head....i may have them written down at work. I believe the best guy in the business is out in colorado somewhere.

That's a calculator on FM's site with all of the stuff they can have done.

Chris,
thanks for the recomendation. I actually have been talking to Kieth at FM for a while now---I just wanted a local builder.

as far as not running serious boost the kit comes with a gt28r --plenty of turbo to flow 15-20 psi if I wanted...I don't know what you consider serious boost but 20 psi in a miata is alot in my mind- since properly tuned that would be north of 300 to the wheels. But I guess it is all in perspective. I have worked with FM engine build calculator---if you saw in my post I was hoping for a local suggestion besides Brainstorm but if there aren't any I can live with that...off to FM it will go. Just wanted local guys if possible. The FMII kit sold is carb legal but has a Link piggyback that will deal with more than the 9 lbs of boost it is kind of set at. After talking to Kieth-- he told me it would be more than enough kit to get where I need. The injectors can be swapped for higher flow rates and other supporting items without bringing attention to the smog nazi's.

US2JDM- thanks for all your insight -- you seem very helpful

So you plan on running 20PSI...that's not gonna be anywhere near CARB legal. Talk to brian at good win racing. www.good-win-racing.com He can point you in the right direction, and he's in so-cal and specializes in miatas as well.

Besides the engine, what else are you planning for the car? I've pretty much completed everything on my miata except the engine, and possibly the rear brakes(I want some 4-pots).
