Its a good camera to start out with. To me it feels too cheap and plasticy, but I think it is perfect for starters.

Heres a link to it and it includes a kit lens for $600 http://www.42photo.com/pd-productid-...mm_vr_lens.htm. Also the D3100 shoot in 1080P.

I'd get it. If you find you really like photography and want to do more with it, you can always upgrade. But there is no point in spending a ton of money at the start and finding out later that you dont enjoy it that much. the 3100 is a good camera. Keep in mind that nikon will come out with the d5100 and probably 2 other DSLR's this year. But the d3100 is pretty new, and at that price range, is quite good.

Thanks Fellas,, I am upgrading from a decent 'point and click' in the CANNON G10, that is a nice unit.
I am excited to get that next stage of detail and quality, best thing is I snagged it for free this morning using a load of United air miles ;-)

The quality of canon seems amazingly top notch, but the ergonomics and my hand never became friends. I bought the nikon d90 and think it is the perfect starter camera for DSLR without needing to upgrade to soon in the future. Whatever you get, photography is a blast and you wont regret it!

I use Canon, but love both brands. Canon leads over Nikon in features right now. But its always a close game and comes down to personal preference. I currently use the Canon 7D. Which in my opinion is the best bang for the buck right now, even with it being a crop sensor camera. 5dMarkIII will be my next upgrade...

I've never liked canon, they put options that i use a lot burried in menus so i have to scroll through a bunch of stuff to set something that should have been on a button in the first place. Plus Canon has never got their battery issue/power consumption resolved, the last time i shot with a 1Ds mark iV i went through 2 batteries in a half day. I've rarely go through a battery in full day with a nikon. But Canon does make some good lenses and a ton of them. But any camera now days is 10x better than most people need so it really doesn't matter as long as you keep it in auto.

I do photography professionally now and would never shoot in just "auto" mode I am much more creative than my camera. ( IMO anyway ) My 7D lets me customize all the buttons and menus to everything I want and I have no problems finding what I need. And as far as the battery problem goes, I average about 2000 pictures on each battery. I have a battery grip that holds 2 batteries, so I go for about 4k pictures or 3 hours of HD video before I need to recharge. And my camera shows my battery level in % and how many pictures each battery has taken and how many it should be able to take. So power is no problem at all with my 7D. But even my old Rebel XTI would last for 700 pictures or so on each battery, which is more than enough for me. I havent spent much time with the 1d series, but my 7D is solid and I have absolutely no complaints.

OP - you will love the camera, but as soon as you get used to it you will be wanting something more . Thats the nature of things though and no matter what camera you get, you will always want one better once you get to know the camera you have . Good luck!

What lense does it come with? For starters I would recommend the Nikon 50mm 1.8 lense. It is super cheap, has a great aperture opening for fast shots, super reliable and is one of the sharper lenses on the market! It is great for alot of different shots, so try and get one, you will love it

I agree, if you need to purchase a lens, this should be your first choice. Awesome lens for the price and great to learn with.

Yeah even my old Nikon F6 film camera lets you customize menus and buttons but some stuff should be a button to start off with. I worked for a photographer for a while that was a die hard canon guy so i loved giving him crap about it, but the last photo shoot we did together i noticed he had the new Nikon D3x and he admitted he loved it. He started with Nikon but they just didn't provide cameras with the options and resolution that canon had for there professional line of bodies and lenses but he said the last few years Nikon's professional level cameras won him back. He also has an expendable budget so it wasn't uncommon for him to show up with $100k in equipment with 3 or 4 professional camera's both Nikon and Canon.

It's a better lense for sure but you really can't go wrong with the 1.8, its so cheap for a great lense that i recommend them to everyone.

this is laughable... please explain to me what it leads nikon in? The only thing I can think of is 60fps in video and swivel screens....

If you want better image quality -> Nikon
If you want better autofocus -> Nikon

If you want a swivel screen -> Canon
If you want 60 fps in video -> Canon

Nikon makes the highest MP camera, D3x... Nikon makes the best high ISO camera, D3s.... Nikon has a lot of the functions of the D3 in its two smaller bodies (D700 and D300 (which includes the same autofocus)).... There are many things nikon cameras have have had as far as functions that are JUST starting to be put in canon cameras (time lapse, auto-iso in manual mode, multiple exposures, virtual horizon inside the viewfinder, etc)...

Nikon has had a huge advantage over canon with gadgets, functionality, ergo, settings, and ease of use, while canon kept upping their MP. The sad thing for nikon is that their new cameras dont seem to be very inovative, while canon has caught up to them with the functionality, nikon hasnt been doing much to stay in front. It is a back and forth battle, and I am sure canon will do things in the next couple years to put them ahead of nikon.... and in a couple more years nikon will go ahead again.

What you speak of is 99% personal opinion.

But if we are going to toss out personal opinions...

If you want a better lenses -> Canon
If you want to use pro lenses on your cheap body -> Canon (not so much an opinion as it is fact)

Image quality is for sure personal opinion. Both Nikon and Canons internal processing creates a look that is pretty specific. I can tell if a photo was shot with a Nikon or a Canon... and neither suck. I can say that right now I am more amused with how the Nikon looks (just because I have been shooting Canon for years and something new intrigues me).

Autofocus, Canon stepped the game up (finally). The 7D/T2i has gone leaps and bounds above what Canon was using. The AF on my 7D makes my 5D seem like a fisher price camera. The 7D feels right on par with all the newer Nikon stuff I have played with. It was a shame Canon crippled the 5D M2 with the old ass AF system.

It is true that Canon has better video stuff. But IIRC you can get flappy screens on Nikons too... and actually I think Nikon offered it first.

I guess my point is you can't go wrong with either at this point in the game. I went with Canon back in 2003 because at the time Canon was well ahead of Nikon... especially in terms if IQ and low light performance. Nikon has fixed those downfalls, and Canon has fixed the downfalls they had.

The only reason I stick with Canon is because all my L glass. I love my L glass and wouldnt trade it for anything.

Nikon vs. Cannon is like Evo vs. Subaru, Intel vs. AMD, Ford vs. Chevy, Nvidia vs. ATI. Both brands are good so get what works best for you. I like my 3100 but I haven't really tried any Cannon SLR cameras either.
