I'm from south Texas and lived about 30 mins from FAL you will not like it, it's a small ugly dirty town with nothing to do man. Oh and a lot of pot holes your Subis will not like it at all. It's a ranch town.

Weslaco isn't bad you're right by McAllen, and you're only a hour from South Padre

the climate in the rio grande "valley" is horrible, you get the worst summers ever plus the threat of hurricanes

alpine and Marfa are in the only mountains in the state, beautiful area

the crime is probably lower there too and a much better place to raise a family, IMO

I'm gonna say McAllen, and I'm a fellow Californian as well. I've working in Texas and living in California for a little over a year. There is absolutely nothing in Van Horn, so throw that off your list, I drive by there every time I come to Texas lol if El Paso is on your list I'd consider that as well, but those parts of Texas you're considering moving to are NOTHING like California my friend. The humidity is ridiculous in south Texas (I was just down there earlier today).

I chose McAllen just because it looked like the bigger city looking town that's where I'll be placed and I bet it's going to be a big difference but hey experiencing other life styles is exciting . I just hope wife and daughter will be ok I plan to find a good neighborhood to live in houses are super cheap out there and look nice and I see some gated communities ? And sucks but seems like the Subie community is not that big down there . How are the laws out there? How are we Subie owners treated ? Are laws more lenient that Cali for smog ?

All the go-green hippies that moved from CA all live in Austin now so smog checks are there. Not sure about your area, being a ranch town area I'm going to say probably not a priority. You should be good.

McAllen is beyond hot and humid. I was dove hunting down there about 20 years ago and the soles of my boots fell off in the field.

Best tex-mex food on the planet though.

Don't know much about smog and laws as my evo stays in CA at my parents house lol I blend in quite well in Texas with a dodge 2500 turbo diesel ***55357;***56834; I work in Midland/Odessa which is similar to blythe or Bakersfield. Be prepared for some big changes, and a lot of Texans hate Austin but I love this place (probably because I'm from California haha). Usually only the major cities like Dallas, Houston, Austin, and San Antonio do smog if I remember correctly, and once you're outside of those cities they don't do smog I believe.

Yes, im from MCS. Good luck at the academy, its not bad at all. There car scene here is very small and a lot different than what you are used too. Im from San Diego, CA so i can relate. Its going to take a bit to get used to but McAllen was the best choice.
