Gear 300 should be fine, makes my short list for racing gearbox oils.

1. Motul Gear 300 75w-90
2. AMSOIL Severe Gear 75w-90
3. SOA Go EXTRA-S 75w-90 (light duty/autocross)

You can't really go wrong with #1 or #2. #3 is a petroleum based oil, so the folks living in colder climates who see sub-freezing temperatures may opt to shy away from it for winter use or at least expect poor shifting and double clutching till some heat gets into it. Above a certain viscosity, these trannies stop shifting work crap.

If you're serious about driving, an option would be a higher capacity rear diff cover.

Heat is the main cause of oil break down, and with the low capacity of the rear diff, it is the first to ramp up in heat. I will say it takes a LOT to get to a bad state in the first place, but I'm just tossing the idea out there.

Any particular reason for the straight cut gears versus sticking to helical?

Having been road racing subies since the 90s, we've found the Amsoil 80w90 to be great gear/diff fluid for the 5MTs. On the 02-03 WRX the Extra S will help get rid of some of the problems associated with them but running straight gears you won't have those issues.

I would go with the Amsoil or the Motul, both great choices.

Which brand straight cuts.

Andrewtech recommends to use straight Redline lightweight shockproof if you are using PPG. That is what I run.

This has worked great for me in two different stock 03 five speeds and an RA close ratio box since 2004. That is over aprox. 7500 track miles and not a single problem, except freshening a couple of syncros. HP range has been 275 to 340 WHP.
Plus it's Smurf Blue!

Ive been using it in my PPG box for road racing making ~520whp. I change it every 2 outings.

lw shockproof for me also. ran it in my stock 02 gearbox and had no issues. changed to ra gears for better ratios and still run it with no issues. for ppg, i would do what andrewtech recommends

PPG straight cuts. simply because i scored a 'box with the car nice & cheap

consensus seems to be motul 300 or redline LW shockproof from what i can tell.

I really did not like Motul 300 in my RallyCross car. Shifting was notchy with occasional grinds.

Switched to LW Shockproof and that went away.

on the Open Cass car, we do teh trans oil every 2 or 3 events

on the RS race car it was more like 2x per season due to lower trans stresses

Straight cut or helical is totally irrelevant when it comes to gear oil. What does matter though is synchronized or dog engagement. If it's synchronized, use Mobil 1 Delvac. If it's dog bog, it's still a great oil, though the Redline would be a good choice as well. I do NOT like Redline in synchronized gearboxes on racecars.

In my DD RL LW shockproof, in the rallycar RL 75/90NS. They don't like it the other way around.

Rally car gets gear oil swapped every 3 events (that includes a practice day)
