No More Smoke! (pcv, Oil Hell)
Ok, this is for all those who were having problems with the Garrett turbos getting a puff of smoke when being stuck in traffic, or waiting at a traffic light.
Recomendations I read were: . Oil restriction mod. . KrankVent. . Rebuild Here is what I did.... I have a 2001 RST with a Minnam Stage II. I had the valve covers connected to a breather... Read a lot about it, and some people even said that you needed to get fresh air.... but I won't get into that right now.... I was changing my PCV valve on Sunday, and decided to connect the line from the block, with the lines from the valve covers. All Teed and before connecting to the the intake (between filter and turbo), I installed the old PCV valve there. This creates a vaccum and doesnt allow air flow in the other direction (towards the valve covers or block). This is pretty much the drawing that Graham or ImprezaRSX had on one of the discussion, only Im using a PCV valve that its much more budget friendly.... The idea is to connect a catchcan in between the line that goes to the intake.... Anyway, just wanted to share this.... Im sure somebody else will come across this problem, and may be they needed a cheaper solution. Its been 3 days, and I have been smoke free. Hopefully, it'll stay like this. Just for the record, I didnt do the oil restrictor mod. Thanks SantoDomingo2.5RS for the idea. Max Max

I have a diagram set up, but I can't up load it. If anyone wants to give me an e-mail address, I'll send it and then they can post it.
I'll explain it once it is up there.... |

Interesting, so you're not running a catchcan?
I'm having a similar issue, (I'll post a thread so not to hijack yours. |

That's exactly what I was planning to do (with the stock PCV too ) however I was planning on only running the crankcase vents like that and putting the valve breathers to a catch can...... any thoughts on that?
it's been said that the crankcase wants a vacuum, however what about the valve breathers? vacuum? atmosphere? hmm. |

When the car comes stock, everything is hooked up to the airbox. This gives it a constant vaccum. I just basically put it back to stock. The one way valves (PCVs) make sure that air goes only one way. Also, somebody said that the crankcase and the valve covers share the same space. If this is the case, and you have the valve covers open to atmosphere, you loose your vaccuum. Somebody said something about "not loosing enogh vaccum when leaving these valve covers open".... There is no such thing as partial vaccum. Either you have a vaccum or you dont.
I should try disconnecting the 2nd PCV valve to see if the car starts smoking again. I'm getting my catchcan today, and I will be putting it right after the second PCV. If any oil is gonna go through the intake, it will go to the catchcan first..... |

Just got off the phone with a Subaru dealer. I asked one of the mechanics, and he said both the block and the valve covers need to get vaccum..... I will try disconnecting the 2nd PCV. If the car still doesn't smoke, then its coming out. If not, if you are a picky car owner and change your oil religiously, you should be ok and no sludge should be that bad.
