Default Help! Polishing Fail!

Hey guys,

Anybody a pro at polishing/detail?

Long story short, I went to polish out a hair line scratch on my brand new OBP STi and all I did was introduce a bunch of swirl marks. (now it reminds me of belaud's old car)

I basically swirled up most of the area above my rear driver side door handle.

Just need someone to help me with correcting my error.

Looks so ugly on the brand new car

If someone fixes it, I promise not too mess it up again *throws polish away*. Should be a quick fix I would imagine...

Please help!

EDIT:
Here's pretty much what happened with the advice to fix, but I don't trust myself anymore!

Help will be rewarded with coffee/donuts/beer. (or $ if it turns out to be a bigger job)

you need to be very patience when polishing a dark color car, worst to be in black. It can be hours of fix just because of some stupid mistake. One time my friend brought his S2K into a local detail shop, $250 package screwed up his paint big time, ended up with $600 of polishing (my friend spent 8 hours to fix someone's 1 hour mistake ~ not including his prep time and interior clean). Good luck with your mistake, pm me if you need help.

Yeah...I was trying to be super careful, but new to a black car and totally didn't expect this. From what I gather, I used too strong of a compound and also didn't use finer polish after to remove the fine scratches - hand polishing also didn't help. Thankfully my mistake has been contained to a small area (50 cm by 20 cm?). If this proves to take a lot longer like the case you mention 5 Zigen, I would definitely compensate whoever helps appropriately. Just want this fixed Was gonna buff the scratch out and wax the whole car but now I've lost my morale.

find someone with a porter cable with a woolpad and use meguiars 105 then follow up with a less aggressive pad (say.. orange) using meguiars 205.

then top with sealant.. let sit.. put some wax to cover up any remaining evidence.

do you have any pics of your swirls?

may not even need a woolpad.

After reading some threads from google search with people who made the same mistakes, I went to get some Meguiar's Ultimate Compound from CanTire. (the other thread recommended Scratch X 2.0 but couldn't find any)
Used a foam applicator and applied. Seems to have helped with most of the swirls. Looks a lot less bad now...but can still see lots of fine clear coat scratches from the Turtle Wax Polish. Probably need an orbital on there with the UC to get the rest out. For now, just did that and put a coat of wax to make it less obvious.

Tried to take pictures but the scratches don't show up as they are too fine and my camera abilities are about as good as my detailing abilities.

Should be good enough while waiting for someone to rescue me!

Belaud : heh...mine still has clear coat to remedy though I wonder if your old one sold yet..? lol

I would have gone and used Meg's Ultimate Polish first to see if it's good enough to take care of your problem. With Ultimate Compound you may need to finish off with a finer polish otherwise you're left with some hazing on the Subaru paint. Depending on what you use, there might be some fillers which will hide any defects so it may look good after you're done but you'll see the defects afterwards. Post some pics of where you're at so we can see how bad it is.

Aggressiveness order is something like:

If he doesnt have a PC or a rotary, i personally wouldnt bother using anything more aggressive than #9 swirl remover. but even then, using your hand or a crappy tire buffer may make things worse.

Not a pro detailer but I have a PC, Meguiar's 105/205 and can try to help.

Could you post a picture of how it looks first?

Those micro swirls will never come out, unless you have the utmost patience.

I can't seem to take a good picture, as the scratches are quite fine. I think I'll have to show you in person
