Guess I might as well spill it... broke the car again!
Yeah, so what's new, right? Well this time it's something that I really never thought I've heard happen before in RS's. Especially stock ones (mine has been bone stock powertrain-wise since October).
I am fairly sure that I have popped a few teeth off of first gear. Yes, first gear. I've broken second before, that was replaced 2.5 years ago, but first... and with a stock clutch... I'm puzzled. I'm not entirely positive what I'm going to do, but I've got a part gearset still with Jon (ralyrcr) that includes the mainshaft and most of the gears. I believe I'm going to rebuild this box myself and pop it back in. I'm definitely not looking forward to it (burnt trans fluid is about the worst smell in the world), but considering I want to spend as little money on this POS as I can before I sell it, it's my only option. Donnie offered to trade me his Prelude for my sister for a few weeks, so I think I just may take him up on it. Yeah... looks like I just may be sporting a Honda soon. Running tally: Motor rebuilds: 4 Trans rebuilds: 2 Wiring reworks: more then I can count Man, do I hate this car ........

She's solid. Dealer maintained(as far as I know), one owner. Used for long trips. No short, fast jaunts. No sport suspension, just the touring model. So you know she hasn't been driven hard or abused. No squeaks, rattles, rusting parts. Carried insurance the whole time, so she's been in for her regular scheduled maintanence. Low mileage too. Not necessarily the most attractive looking one out there, but she's held up pretty well for her age. Let me know if anyone's interested. |

Nirmit - Yeah, you're telling me. I'm just hoping that along this week I can even make myself get a few other things done as well. I'm not sure if I'm in the market for a Prelude just yet... I'll have to drive this a bit and see. It's attractive enough, but the seating position is bugging the hell out of me. I'm going to have to get out there and really take a look and see if I'm missing some kinda height adjustment in the seat cause I feel like I'm against the roof all the time.
Eric - Yeah, I'm still ahead of Jorge, but I think that on (ralyrcr) still has us both beat. |

Yeah Nick, there should be a lever that adjusts the seats up and down ... not the actual seat but the bucket section itself ... I've always enjoyed sitting up higher so mine's setup to the highest position, I think I also like feeling bigger in the car as I'm only 5'7.5" The cabin is definitely representative of a coupe The lude is a heavy car, but the chassis is really well balanced. The older 4th gen (93-96) Vtec's are actually quite fast stock and can be made to handle and look very well....still miss my 93 si.

Hondas always have sunroofs, and that means I can't fit in them unless I've got the seat at a severe gangsta lean. It kept me from buying an Integra, Civic Si, or Sentra SE, and the headroom was a big selling point for the Impreza.

Well... I just heard back about what I broke. Seems I split the driven 1st gear in half.
No other damage, just split first in half... supposedly the mainshaft is still in good shape, too. Man, is this STRANGE. Hopefully I'll have souvenirs in my hands on Thursday. |

Do you think that previous modding weakened it? How long do you figure it will take to get the car all fixed up and running again?

At this poiint I think it is a miricle that any part of the transmission wasn't broken.

Heh, I'm trying to stay away from Subaru after this, which is becoming an issue. I'd almost half consider a cheap early Impreza L sedan, but that is about it.
I am not sure that the previous modding weakened it... it is such an odd break that I honestly don't know what to attribute it to other then a part defect and just the right conditions to break it. The trans has been out and is now up in Madison getting reassembled by a scoob-tech. I am told that it will be done to be brought down here Thursday (tomaro) night, so hopefully the car will be on it's feet and under it's own power by Friday afternoon sometime. Rob - It's only the second time I broke the trans... the motor has been my real money pit. |
