Default noob here, help with weird sound!

I have a 06 wrx, bone stock, and have some issues with a weird sound I encountered recently.

Here are the symptoms:

1. you can hear it best at idle
2. sound syncs with engine.
3. you cannot hear it once car is in motion
4. Sound is not audible from outside the car and not coming from engine bay.

And here is weirdest part.
the sound is the strongest when you sit in the rear drivers seat. When I put my hand on the side sill (the carpet side) I can feel a vibration that syncs with this noise. Put my ear on it, and I can hear it very clear. BUT, when I look under the car, I can't hear much for feel any vibration. This only happens on the drivers side rear seat area.
Going bonkers trying to find the culprit. Does anyone know what's going on? Thanks

Depends if it sounds like metal pinging or clashing or like plastic thumping or vibrating....if you think it sounds like metal than it could be as simple as a bolt vibrating or something with the exhaust considering that it goes right under the drivers side. If it sounds like plastic than it could be a plastic panel in one of the wheel wells or it could be one of the two plastic panels that are bolted under the engine just behind the front bumper (my right one came loose and started vibrating, i just used a bolt and wing nut to fix it)

The sound is not metallic. It's more like "whud whud whud" that syncs with the engine rpm. This sound is strong enough to cause resonace along the driver's side door sill. At the car idle, I can put my hand along the inside part of the door sill and "feel" the sound. This vibration is strongest along the part behind the driver's seat. On top of that, you cannot hear this sound outside or under the car.
When I check my exhaust, the bolts seemd tight and nothing rubbing. WTF.

Get it up on a lift and check it out while its running--maybe use one of those automotive sthetoscopes. Its hard to describe "noises" and have someone who can't hear the sound diagnose the rpoblem. Hey maybe it COULD be a muffler bearing like JMLASER seyz, those are a PITA to replace. But it does sound like exhaust noise imo.

I read around some forums and found that "hitting" exhaust leaks are usually from the exhaust manifold. What is the possibility that the driver's side manifold is leaking?

Odd thing is that they tell me to drive with the windows down to hear the sound better. But I can only tell that if all the windows are up and the radio off. It is a rather annoying sound. Going crazy over this. please help.

exhaust bearings.

Sounds silly, but check to see if the seatbelt is fully tightend in the rear seat. Mine got loose and made a nice rattling.

By the way some VW like R32, Toureg,Pheton all have exhausts that have a device that switches the exhaust from single to twin on the fly. It is what you would call a "muffler bearing". Don't believe it call a dealership and ask. ..

Good job making a video, unless 99% of those on here! That definitely is not normal, especially with stock exhaust.

Yeah, it definitely didn't sound like that before. Only noticed it when I had to drive with no stereo with the window up. An exhaust leak by the manifold will lead to boost leak right? I'm hitting target boost (12psi) @3500, which is normal I suppose. Would a leak by the doghnut gasket cause this? Whatever it is, it is strong enough to pulsate through the chassis, only on the left side...

Alright, getting somewhere with this. I traced the sound to these two lines that are right in front of the rear driver wheel. I hear the same sounds from the stethoscope through them. Question is, what are these lines?

Holy crap. You drive a Subaru, which by nature makes all kinds of strange noises, and you were able to hear and trace one particular sound to some random lines using a stethoscope? This is getting kinda obsessive.

Well, the sound wasn't there from the beginning, so it is natural to investigate this rather loud cabin noise. Those lines are fuel lines, and it goes through the door sill to the engine bay.

Refer to image:
I traced that same sound to the fuel lines (#1) that ends in a pressure regulator. Then it goes to the bracket (#2) and to the passenger side. At this point I thought it was the vibration from the mounting point of the bracket, but the surroudings did not have that sound. So I moved over, and right by the intake hose(#3), there is a whole bunch of parts that seem to end my tracing. The same sound is very audible here too. Again, the surrounding things (engine head, vaccum line, etc) is quiet.

Now to consider this "normal" is not right. I know what kind of sound this car makes, from the wastegate chatter to the valve tickings, I've heard them all. If you think this is normal, try and feel the area that I pointed out in the image. Let the car idle at normal operating temp. If you feel a pulsating vibration through the fuel lines, and you can hear it in your cabin with the windows up, then you got me.

If there are people knowledgeable enough to identify the cause, please help.

hmm, I guess no one here is good enough to answer how the fuel system works. All I got was a bunch of noob bashing. I guess the rumors hold true.
