Default 06 wrx ash tray gauge keep cover?

Is there any way to keep the ash tray door cover when installing a gauge pod in the ash tray location?

If you keep the gauge recessed back far enough it would shut, but at that point I would imagine it would be hard to see. I have a turbo timer (for warming my car up in the winter) in there and I was able to retain the ash tray door and have it be able to shut. I couldn't see you going any bigger than 52mm, I could be wrong though.

You would just have to cut the backing and position the gauge far enough back for it to close.

I was thinking something cleaner like the subtle solutions plate, but you can't keep the door with it

make your own plate and recess it back in there as suggested.

Think subtle blanks are great for those that are lazy to do the work or don't have access to materials. I looked at them myself, but they seem way over priced for a piece of metal and without door doesn't have that smoothness.

I know what I did isn't a gauge but concept applies. If you have the materials and tools in front of you and will to give it time you can make something nice.
