Default is it safe to drive on a blown center diff?

Now that you all think im an idiot from my title , ill explain what's going on. A few months ago I had signs of a center diff failing (front wheels had slow-speed stutter on sharp turns) and a few weeks ago when reversing I got a loud crack/bang, and now there is a rattling/whining noise while coasting. There is no more stutter/binding it just sounds like something metal spinning around when I am coasting. Car goes into every gear fine. I drained the fluid and found three decent sized chunks on the magnet. I'm fairly confident that all the damage is in the tranny. Now my question is, if I am planning on saving up for a six-speed or just swapping in an entirely new 5-speed, if I drive on it is there anything else that can be damaged outside the tranny? I haven't driven on it yet, because im just not sure if I run the chance of damaging anything else, so am I okay to drive on it until i get my replacement? or is that a horrible idea?

It wouldn't hurt anything outside the tranny. Just the transmision internals. My buddie had the same thing happen to him with his sti. Except it was the rear diff that made the car behave that way. The front wheels would squeal/skip around turns and the rears would hop/drag.

I don't usually recommend driving a blown transmission. This time it's no different.

Still, nothing outside of the transmission can be harmed and if you are definitely going to swap the entire unit, then it doesn't really matter what kind of damage is done.

I have had a car that it ended up jambing the transfer gears and locking the wheels up which in turn broke a tooth off the rear diff's pinion gear.

This is what i wanted to do originally, but the metal chunks that I found in the tranny made me think twice about only replacing the center diff. Do you guys think it could be a matter of just swapping the center diff even though there were chunks?

Is it worth the risk?

That's not a question we can answer for you. To me, it's never worth the risk.

Damaging the rear diff? That is certainly a first! We usually see broken transfer gears before broken pinion gears. The transfer gears are tiny in comparison to the rear diff pinion gears.
