I am possibly moving from WA to Fairbanks and want to take my STI with me but don't have anything to tow it with. Right now I have a 03 Forester as my daily driver, but I know that will not be able to do the job. So I am looking at selling that and getting a crew cab truck that will be able to pull the STI on a trailer for 2300 miles. I really like the Nissan Frontier or the Toyota Tacoma or Tundra. Would the Frontier be able to do the job or would I have to go with a bigger truck. Any input helps. Thanks!

Have you thought about shipping it instead?

Frontier/Tacoma should be fine as long as you're not towing a bunch of other stuff too. Hell, I towed a wrecked STI a few hundred miles through North Carolina with my Forester XT and it actually did pretty good(wouldn't have tried it with a non-turbo Forester).

Haven't looked into that option yet, but would actually like to have a bigger truck anyways.

Thanks! I am just trying to get some ideas before I was to actually move. Was just seeing if anyone on here would have any input on what would be a good truck for the job.

Have you taken the time to research the towing capacities of these two trucks? That said, I personally like the Tundra over the Tacoma or Frontier.

But if I were really buying, it would be a 3/4T or 1T Chevy Duramax. I had an '05 1T CCLB and it would tow a house if you wanted. It towed our 32' 10K pound RV like it was a toy.

I would not count on the Nissan Frontier. They're nice, but lack in truck presence.

I have towed various wrx's from Kenai to Anchorage with a 1/2 ton pickup (Chev). No problem. A wrx is not extremely heavy.

I towed a heavier buick century from Kenai to Flagstaff, Arizona with a 1/2 ton GMC, in January. A heavier, more powerful truck would have been nice, but it wasn't necessary. I have towed wrx's with a 1 ton duramax chev and I could hardly tell that I had a tow attached.

Bottom line, bigger is better when towing. But a wrx tows like the lightweight compact car that it is. I would choose the truck that makes the most sense for you for the long term.

If you plan to do this in the winter, make sure you have good tires. An old set of tire chains can also come in very handy if the road conditions turn nasty.

I bought a new Tundra a few years ago, it had the 5.7L, that truck was a beast, and it has a very high tow rating for a 1/2 ton truck, sold it, to help me quit racing MX and moved on to the STI. Now we are missing the truck and will probably trade my wifes 07 Legacy on a newer Tundra Crewmax, I previously had a double cab and would recommend the crewmax if you want the space and or adults riding in the back.

A Tundra would be plenty but my dad had a Nissan Titan for a few years and we pulled A LOT more weight than a STi.

Really don't mean to be an ass, but why not just drive it up?
Also my dad just towed a hovercraft up here with a geo tracker.

I don't want to drive up there with my DD right now, fly back and then drive that up. Lol would probably end up costing more money anyways that way and waaaaayy too much time on the road. Already not looking forward to the 2300 mile trip up there in the first car.

The guy I bought my Suzuki Samurai from towed it up from Colorado with his Frontier. Not sure how well it did but it was done.

I personally would drive it or ship it. The amount of money you are going to spend between renting/buying a trailer and gas is going to be alot compared to shipping it out of Seattle. If you are going to tow I would go with a Tundra, we moved her from Florida and towed a 14' camper.

Hell just get a Raptor. We towed Granny with one when her clutch went out and that's the fastest Granny has ever been!

-If you are buying a truck JUST for moving up here, I'd 1) buy the cheapest most reliable truck you can get that'll tow everything you need or 2) reconsider why you need the truck and ship everything.

-IF you are buying a truck because you genuinely want a truck, and in FBX it isnt a bad idea... then focus on getting something that meets ALL your needs for the truck. Do you want a full size or compact truck? Will you mainly tow just the STi on this trip, or plan to use it to tow sleds/bikes/atvs/camper? Since you would be replacing the Forester with it, will you be happy with this truck, and its creature comforts for DD status?

My recommendations for a truck would be as follows: Titan > Tundra > then depends on what I am buying the truck for... towing I'd follow with Chevy than ford, just for a DD truck I'd probably follow with a Tacoma.

All that being said though, my girl has a 95 Chevy 2500, looks beat to crap but has been damn reliable as a truck. It towed my Corrado numerous times, towed a race GTi (with a leaking water pump) back from Tanacross and then some (~350 miles), helped pull people out of snow banks and even helped pull out a Tahoe with a Tow dolly attached. Aside from something newer with more comfort, I dont see a reason to have any other truck.

The trip is not bad, I did it in two and a half days and it's actually a really nice drive, the gas is expensive though. If your Forester is your DD and your thinking of trading it for a truck, a truck might not be an ideal DD unless it's newer and you have additional use for it once you get up here. If you're getting a trailer too, you can buy one and actually make money by selling it up here.
