auto to manual conversion with big torque expectations
i have rescently purchased a used my01 2.5 rs
the only problem is that it is an automatic but i got such a great deal on the car and the fact that i am planning on turboing the car anyway(along with upgrading to heavier gears) i couldnt pass up the deal so hear are my questions 1: can i use my auto tranny housing for the conversion or not 2: what else is involved in the switch(dont worry about the ecu) im also considering putting in sti version 5or6 ra gears in after reading dms-usa's posts what are all your opinions of this thank you all very much for your time

Man I really must be the only person who has done this....
If you do a search under my profile and look in my recent posts I have posted plenty of information on this in similar threads. IMHO if you are planning on 250-300+ torque at over a broad RPM range you may want to consider keeping the auto and beefing it up since it already has one stock. Just take a look at my posts and then post a question here and I will do my best to answer it. Rich |

Kaneda3,
Since you are planning on turboing the car I would leave the automatic. The automatic has been proven to hold up in high horsepower applications. With a few inexpensive mods such as replacing the fluid with a good synthetic ATF and adding a good auxillary cooler the slushbox can be made even more bullet proof. There are not a lot of options for the manual box without spending lots and lots of dollars. Dog gear sets will get you a stronger tranny but will cost big $$$ and street drivability will suffer in my opinion. Even the WRX tranny is questionable when it comes to strength. Imagine the launches you will get with your turboed 2.5 and slushbox! Punk |

You cannot use the auto housing to make it a manual.

ok after looking around and reading for over 8 hours now i finally found what i was looking for
thank you mprezya for your help and no i will not drive an automatic so dont suggest it ty also here is the list of things needed for anyone else interested manual trans clutch and flywheel pedal box w/ clutch cylinder and slave cylinder rear diff (why? because auto cars come equipped w/ 4.44 gearing while most manuals come equipped with 4.11 gearing. UK/Australian WRX's come equipped w/ 3.9 gearing while most Japanese WRX/STi's come with 4.44. Bottom line is that you must match the final drive gearing in the trans and rear otherwise you will have unequal shaft speeds and a constant load on the viscous coupling changing the torque split and overheating the viscous unit) trans mount and rear crossmember driveshaft Starter Front Springs (if stock, the auto springs are heavier rate due to the different weight..but not necessarily essential to change back) Shifter Shift boot and trim piece. and dont let anyone tell you its not worth considering the fact that i would have to swap out the oem flywheel, clutch, shifter, differential, and gears anyway its hardly anymore for the rest especially if i buy used parts Last edited by kaneda3; 08-10-2001 at 04:10 PM. |

I have to agree with Rich (MPREZYA) on this one. If you've already got the 4EAT, you'd be money and heartache saved to beef it up, and perhaps install a manual shift valve body instead of going to a manual transmission.
There are a number of vendors who offer beefed up 4EAT internals. Rancho Transmission in Temecula, CA and Level 10, somewhere in Pennsylvania (I believe) for sure offer beefed up 4EAT's. Trust me, I'm strongly torn between converting my 5 speed 98RS to a 4EAT or going with dog gears. This coming Wednesday will move me one big step closer to having to make a decision as the built shortblock for my forthcoming turbo system is getting put in the car. If Subaru offered a 5EAT, it'd be no contest, I'd go with a manual shift slushbox and be done with the worries. |

"and no i will not drive an automatic so dont suggest it" Sounds to me like you are driving one now. You are the one that posted this thread. Don't be so sensitive when some of us suggest things. The great deal you got on the car better have been a very great deal because this mod is gonna cost a lot of money (as well as time). This might just wipe out the money you saved up front on the car. IF you can do this mod yourself then the price shouldnt be all THAT bad. Maybe about 1500-2k(my numbers are probably wrong)? But if you have to pay for labor its going to cost some good $$$.

If you go manual and turbo, don't switch the front springs since you are adding more weight to the front of the car with the turbo kit. Just a thought.

Hey Rich,
I haven't answered yet, since everything's been in limbo with this group buy from hell... Now that things are starting to move, I may have to make a choice on manual vs. 4EAT... |

what the hell punkswrx
first of all im not driving an automatic
its sitting in a garagewith its engine removed and in the process of being built up for high boost infact i never even drove the car second i only said "and no i will not drive an automatic so dont suggest it ", so no one waists their time third yes i did get an incredible deal on the car $5000 dollars for a my01 2.5rs auto impreza with 5,000 miles that was a theft recovery and all that was taken were things that i was going to replace anyway finally like i said before the reason people end up payin like $2500 for a conversion(jcsports price) they have to buy all the oem pieces that need to be replaced i on the other hand, am buying all aftermarket parts so the cost will be closer $3500 but im gonna have a tranny that is alot stronger than stock by the way i am doin it myself(with help from a friend) i posted hear first because im more familiar with honda and wanted to know the differences thanx to all those with helpful suggestions |
