Default Axis Stage 2 vs. USDM STi 2.5

I wrecked my ej205 motor on the track and I going to rebuild with a 2.5...I'm not currently going to do big power (stock td04), but I want to put in a very solid bottom end that can be built upon for more power in the future (say ~350whp). Is there any real advantage to the Axis block over the STi block?

The block itself is stronger or just the pistons (forged vs. hypercast)? For my power goals would the STi block be more than enough?

Axis Stage 2 Components:
- 2.5 L STi Semi-Closed Deck Shortblock
- Standard Sleeve Liners
- Standard 2.5L STi Forged Crankshaft
- Standard 2.5L STi Forged Connecting Rods
- Axis Racing/CP Forged Pistons
- 7000 Rev Limit Recommended

Seems like the only difference is the pistons.

Chad,

For your application, the stock STI block will be plenty.

Wait is this Ron as in Ron from Axis? Are you advising me not to purchase your product? I really appreciate your candor, not many people would go out of there way to give information that stops a sale. Thank you.

PS, The guys from Dent Sport Garage speak very highly of your work.

I can't stand to see people overspend on something they will never need. There are far too many ripoffs in the tuning industry and I'm not going to be one of them.

Karma: the only rule to live by.

Thanks for the kind words,
Ron

I felt exactly the same way when I worked in the ski industry many, many years ago. They fired me.

stock new 2.5L Sti block ~ $1700 - $1800?
CP pistons $600 - $700 - do a little math

Boast about having an Axis block in your Subie = Priceless

Don't forget you have to upgrade your drivetrain... the 5sp tranny and R160 diff won't last too long with the added torque of the 2.5L

OEM STi block = $1450 (dealer hookup)

Ron's block = $2300 + shipping

The bottom line is that I'm not doing this now because I'm financially ready, I'm doing because my DD's engine is a paperweight and I need things fixed.

As far as the drivetrain goes, that will be my limiting factor in output. I'll slap in a new oem clutch disk, but nothing more...if it slips, the power gets turned back, it will be a conservative tune. I'm thinking about using a bigger turbo, like a vf22, that way it won't just be a huge chunk of instant tranny shattering down low torque, like if I keep theTD04 and the party won't be over at 5500 rpms.

One of my friends had the 22 on his 2.5 block, and he said it responded like a VF39, and made 39 power. He's got an SR55 now, but I would suggest at least going 18G if not 20G.

Sweet dealer hook-up!
That a really good price.
Yep- you can always limit the power and you'll have the base for more down the road.
It's good that you're gauging all your options.

I've got a full sti longblock with an Element GT52 and water injection on a stock 5 speed. Holds up just fine.

Pick the right clutch and drive nicely.
