Default ..:2.5 to full sti swap:..

i want a 98-99 2.5 subaru (whatever is cheap but will last) , fully replaced with an sti swap. i want the full sti motor, tranny, etc (but i dont care about sti interior at all) . i want coilovers that can handle the upgrade, 17's, uprgraded breaks, 2 race seats, and a roll cage. i need a estimate how much this sort of transfermation would cost. i live in jersey and would have precision tuning do all the work for me. anything im leaving out? let me know.... im extremely interested but not too familiar with subarus. i am also not looking for top of the line most expensive stuff when it comes to wheels/breaks/etc. i dont want to spend 2,000 on coil overs, 3,000 on volks, and 2,000 on breaks, and 1,500 on seats.... i just want nice stuff that will get the job done without throwing all my cash down the drain( rotas, cheaper model sparcos, base model coil over like the teins, etc. im sure you guys understand... thanks

Here is what I would do. call up kingpin, IAPerformance, Gruppe-s, or anyone that imports JDM stis, and ask what their combo price is for all the part you mentioned that come off an sti. It is better to buy in bulk, trust me.

If you want GC8 stuff, like a version 6 or below motor, suspension, etc, talk to gr8wheels (a vendor here)

The best motor/tranny combo is version 7-9, but if you want to save a bit you can get version 6 or below, get a package price for brakes and suspension.

You're looking at 30k roughly. It's more expensive than you think. ImprezaRSFan! did his car for about 18k including price of car, but he didn't change the interior, suspension, wheels, no roll cage etc. Also, he got a hell of a deal on his motor/tranny/rear diff like I did. Usually that combo goes for around $10k.

You're gonna need a lot of money and time, I hope you have it.

If you want V6 or lower I would listen to Capt Crunch and get in contact with Gr8wheels. This is who I am going through and they can get alot of hard to find JDM parts. As for brakes and seats and suspention they can get you a good deal on used JDM stuff too. Check them out and give Jon a call.

Umm... I'm about $33k into my '98... maybe a little more. This is after performing ALL the work myself and getting like 80% of the stuff at really insane discounts. USDM STi v8 swap (tranny+motor being ran from a hydra... making around 400whp). DMS's, wilwoods, a few other suspension/brake toys. FIA legal cage (only the back half finished so far) Recaro's..... the list goes on. Basically the car is short a pair of a-pillar bars, the needed cross braces for those, door bars, and skidplates... and she'll be a competitive open class rally car.

What do you need a cage for? If you are going to race this car you should reconsider the car you are looking to buy as there are no classes for swapped turbocharged Impreza's. For what you are looking to do you are looking at spending well over 30k especially if you are going to have all of it done at a shop. You are also looking at not having the car for months if you are planning on doing this all in one shot. I've pretty much the set up that you are looking to achieve but I have been working on this project for over 4 years. PM me if you want more info.

If you want Ver7 and above.. I would talk to Adrian( vendor name: flat4motorsports.com)

He probally gets the most low mileage and rare stuff for great prices.. I would buy a full car and sell off what you dont need/want to make your swap easier, and cheaper..

Actually if he's going to Rally it he can go in the Prototype class for SCCA or CARS in Canada. There are plenty of grassroots teams doing that...Last Ditch Racing, Matt Iorio, etc. Its definately feasable. As far as where to get the JDM Swap I would go with Gr8wheels, Jon is extremely helpful.

Think you could kinda itemize the 33k a little. Is that including the price of the car?

Cheers,
Chris

cheapest route would to buy a very cheap Impreza L(500-6000) and do the motor in that. The engine/tranny/rear end, depending on which version sti you're talking about and how complete and clean the parts are, is around 8k minumum. Like everyone else says, it'll be easier to buy a whole, wrecked sti or if you have any connections in japan, get someone to ship a wrecked sti in a container coming here. if you want to go cheap with everything else, you can just get subaru 4 pots and keep 16's. as for shock and springs handling it, I'm sure the stock ones are capable unless you're wanting to be competitive in autox and/or track racing

L-500-3000
sti v7 and up motor/tranny/rear end/wiring harness-at least 8k
stock rs shock and springs-200max
16" rs rims-~350
subaru 4 pot front brakes-~500
2 cheap seats with sliders and brackets-~600

You need to figure out what you're going to do with the car. a wrx motor might even suffice for what you need. if you're going to autox, wrx brakes are fine as well. it really depends on how much you're willing to spend and what you're going to use for the car

The STi swap is considerably more because it includes the brakes, suspension, etc. etc. All parts are from salvage cars with less than 30K miles. We can source extra low miles cars, although the price might be a little higher.

Here are some pics of the completed car.

I don't usually reccomend shops unless asked, but having seen this car in person its hard not to point to this example of a job well done. Look at the completeness and at that pricing too!

I know a dealer selling an old RS ready for a swap. The service manager was going to sell the car as is or put some of that stuff you wanted on the car and then sell it=) Check out Dave Brown at Metric Subaru (aka MSPT Huntington, NY)
