If your stock radio stopped working would that not be covered under warranty because you have a TBE? If this is a problem that has nothing to do with your mods then they shouldnt have an issue covering it under warranty. |

I have a 2011 WRX with 18k on it. For the first 12-15k miles the temp gauge was always dead in the middle under normal driving conditions (street and highway). Now for the past 3-5k miles it is consistently sitting just above the middle mark under the same driving conditions. The needle will settle back to the middle position when idling at a stop light.
The coolant level is about 3/4 of the way to max. I'm not too concerned but I'd like to know if my car is slowly losing coolant or what might cause the temp to rise under the same driving conditions. I've noticed that my 2012 wrx temp needle vary's by almost one notch from slightly above the middle mark down to halfway between the next mark below. Seems kind of weird to me since my 2006 wrx was pretty much always dead center after being warmed up and never flucuated.

Still having the same problem here, almost a year later.... I am under warranty, and I've had THREE visits to try to fix this, they simply can't find the source, and they tell me that since there's no CEL on, there's nothing to worry about and nothing more they can do. Got too tired of fighting it, but I'm planning on doing a 4th visit in a few weeks as I only have 2,000 miles of warranty left....

Here is the other thing, you have 2k miles left of warranty, but because this was an existing problem that has never been fixed there is an acception to the rule here. They should continue to warranty parts related to the issue because it is "on going". Dont wait 8 months for them to fix it, but keep going to them often till it is fixed. Just simply demand it gets fixed, leave it there till it is fixed and tell them its going to stay there till it is. |

Update, took my car in and after they did some looking around about the temp gauge they found the head gasket had a leak, so they have to replace the head gasket. Just glad they found it, explains all the problems I've been having.

If you could scan and post the work order, that would be helpful.
I would be interested to know how they found the gasket leak and whether it was internal or external. My block is bone dry on the outside and I don't lose coolant. After they replaced my water pump and that fixed nothing, I am skeptical. |

Ill post more tomorrow when I get the car back and look over what they found, hopefully it was just the gasket but they said it could be more. |

it was fluctuating a good amount, but only in between shifting then it would level back out. Dealership sent the heads out, hopefully they determine what the root cause was.

How much is a 'good amount'? How many bars is it moving? Does it fluctuate up or down from the middle mark?

It was dipping down between 2 bars and 5 bars sometimes, never saw the temp go above half.

Update got the car back a day ago, work order states there were a lot of parts replaced, the description page states
Customer states that there is a rough idle. usually bogs down from 2000-25000 RPMS. States temp gauge fluctuates. Confirmed customer concern found vehicle overheating found hydrocarbons in coolant. Removed both heads found both gaskets leaking internally and heads out of spec. Replaced both cylinder head gaskets and all related items. sent to machine shop for resurfacing. Looks like they also replaced the thermostat and thermostat gasket. I will try and load the parts page up to show all the parts replaced. So far the car feels better, idle is stronger, temp gauge hasn't shown any fluctuation. But the whole issue is concerning that after 30k miles an issue this severe occured. I don't abuse my car at all, my only real mods are a short throw with bushings and spt exhaust, check and change my fluids regularly. Just a little unusual to happen in a car with this low miles with no prior problems. |

Thanks for reporting back. Please let us know if the temp gauge fluctuates any more. Sorry to hear about all the trouble.
I have a sneaking suspicion that the thermostat is responsible for the gauge. Just my theory, though. |

Yea that was my initial thought, I've had enough cars have small issues with the thermostat or the sending unit. But I was thrown back when they said the head gasket.

Possible Solution Found
All,
I am out of town right now, (with my car dropped off before I left) so I can't confirm any of this myself yet, but my dealership claims a solution has been found. This is my third trip to the dealer for the temp gauge needle problem. Once again they confirmed it themselves that it was happening, but this time they say I'm not the only person whose been in for this issue. In fact, they now have an official Subaru publication on the issue, which says it's due to loose wires in the engine bay. True or not, at any rate they say they applied the fix in the publication, and now claim that on subsequent test drives they now no longer see the problem. They seemed a lot more confident this time than in the previous trips, where they replaced thermostats or did coolant flushes, and kind of shrugged and said "Hopefully that's it...." (which it wasn't) The fact that they claim there's an official Subaru bulletin on this now is good news. Hopefully it's the reason some of us are having this problem. I get home on the 27th, I'll drive around myself and report back! |

This is great news Mike. Sorry I have not posted, but I did take my car in a couple months ago and 2 SOA techs were brought in to see what was going on with my car. I know for sure they reflashed my ECU, but they really won't tell me what else they did - but whatever they did has solved my issues as well. I've logged around 3,000 miles and not 1 issue of the needle dropping/hesitation. It was extremely annoying....and now that my car is fixed I am in love all over again. Can't wait to see/read the TSB, I knew all of us weren't crazy!! |

Hey guys! Sorry for the delay. Yes, they do appear to have fixed it! The overall behavior now is still a little different than the day I bought it, but the fluctuation is gone. Now, my needle warms up in bursts... I'll see it make brisk moves of about 1/4th a notch every few seconds, until it reaches about 95% of normal. Then, it will stay at about 95% for a good 5-10 minutes... why, I don't know... until it reaches 100% of normal. Once there, it stays there completely. I haven't seen one movement at all.
The reasons for the not-perfectly-linear warm-up cycle could be many. I've had several coolant flushes, a few thermostat replacements, and my current coolant has come from a tuner shop and may not be exactly what Subaru's computers are expecting. (I thought maybe a third party could have found something Subaru didn't....) But the fluctuations are gone. My service paper says the following (Paraphrased) "Performed wiggle test on the main engine harness while observing ECT sensor and was able to duplicate the fluctuation. Technician determined the issue to be ECT signal wire connector B21 & E2, Pin 12 disassembled, connectors checked for sliding resistance and resoldered and crimped. Retest shows ECT now steady." |

Taking my car in tomorrow for the fluctuating temperature gauge again.
Description: My car will warm up to one notch below the middle mark in about 5 minutes. After that, it will only reach the middle mark if I come to a stop. After it reaches slightly above the middle mark (usually at an intersection), it stays there unless I drive above 50mph for a few minutes or coast down a hill in 4th or 5th gear. Then the gauge will drop as much as 1 full notch depending on the length and grade of the hill. The gauge will then rise back above the middle notch next time I come to a stop. If I am running the A/C, this is far less likely to happen for whatever reason, and the gauge will usually stay on the middle mark. I mostly notice the fluctuation when the A/C is off. |

All,
Just a bit of bad news - after having been totally fixed for several weeks - the longest I'd ever seen it not move at all since it started being a problem - it slowly but surely started moving again. It's not nearly as bad as it was before, but it's definitely doing funky stuff again. I wonder if maybe the solder they use for the wiring harness is substandard and getting melted slowly by engine heat? |
