I love the "oil is oil" idea.
www.bobistheoilguy.com Oil is certainly just oil, but Oil A can differ from Oil B 100% and yield different results for OCI, mpg, smoothness, noise, etc I run Group-V Redline 5w-30 at all times. |

it's all about how often you change your oil. however, oil makes different engine out-put result.

Viscosity and oil change interval is more important for you running a Stage 4 WRX in the Southeast. Use 10W40 of any brand and do a used oil analysis at 4,000 miles.
I use conventional oil in my wife's 99 Outback. I used to use 5W30 Castrol GTX but switched to 5W30 Havoline after reading up on bobistheoilguy.com. Both oils gave me good used oil analysis results except for shearing down to a 20 weight in 4k miles. Imagine what a stage 4 WRX would do to a 5W30. -Dennis |

I run Castrol 5W30, and change it and the filter religiously at 3,000 miles.

If you have any stage 4 or above 5-30 in my opinion is not going to cut it. 5-40 or 10-40 or 15-50 is my personal favorite.

I run 5w30 in our two basic trim Impreza daily drivers.
I ran 10w-30 over the summers for awhile and swear I lost MPG (plus it was a PIA) so I just went to 5w-30 all the time. I'm still debating on if I should run synthetic in the turbo. I probably will though. |

Just to add to my comments above in post no. 8. Even if you use a 10W40, chances are that it is going to shear to a 30 weight if it's a conventional oil. There is a Forester XT owner in TX that ran GTX 10W40 in a stock FXT and it always sheared to a 30 weight in under 3,000 miles.
IMO that's better than using a 30 weight (even with some synthetics) and having it shear to a 20 weight, but also why it's a good reason to use a shear stable synthetic oil (German Castrol, Redline, ester based Motul oils, etc.). Any of those oils could probably go to 7,000 miles or more with no problem. If I used conventional, I would actually do an analysis on the oil at 3,000 miles if I were you. -Dennis |

I run Chevron Supreme 10w-30. I've just sent off for my 1st oil analysis @ 80K, but it's well documented at BITOG that Chevron is a top rated dino oil. For the price vs. performance/protection, it can't be beat.
I guess the only downside is that it can be hard to find. I get mine at Costco, by the case. MT |
