Unless you're driving a 35 year old car, just check your fluids and tire pressure like you normally would.

beef jerky and mountain dew is all you need.

and if you don't want to stop bring a container to pee in, an old gas can works well

There are these amazing things called rest stops too! Then you can get out and stretch your legs too! Win win.

And +1 for not sitting on your wallet.

The most important thing is to remember that being late is better than never getting there. If after 8-9 hours youre tired, find a meal and take a power nap. There is no need to push yourself.

Some of the GPSs Ive owned in the past have required me to do 80-85 on the highway to not make the ETA go up.

I make a lot of trips between Northern and Southern California (5 hour drive) and I found the best thing for me is listening to podcasts. I collect the weekly episodes of This American Life and at an hour each, it makes my drive feel a lot shorter.

first: go to speedway, pick up 2 arnold palmers. a thing of pinwheels (pecan swirl thingys) cheese curls and a trumoo. That should cover the first two hours. After that, put on cruise control, take your shoes off and watch porn on your smart phone. hahah

Bring a walkie and try to tune in to different trucker frequencies, usually those guys are good for a laugh or two. Sometimes if you join in they'll joke and bs with you. Good entertainment.

Check fluid levels and tire pressure. Can of coke and a bottle of No-Doze. Try to synchronize bladder with gas tank. One gets emptied when the other gets filled. Buy fresh coke on way from rest room to gas pump, lather-rinse-repeat.

Ok, it wasn't violent so maybe my choice of words was incorrect.

+1 on "don't sit on your wallet", my back starts to hurt and leg cramps up just driving home from work. And it's not like I have a Costanza wallet, just the basics: no cash, license, atm card and AAA card.
