Very straight forward question.
Could this thread be more confusing?
If nirvana is: 8.0" ....... +43 to +47 (assuming for a stock suspension set-up) ...and stock STI wheels (05-07) are 8" wide-- Why are the stock wheels +53 offset? Did I read through ALL 53 odd pages. NO. Did I read through a bunch? YES. Did I do a bunch of searches? YES |

Damn, the USDM seats sure do suck, thanks for reminding me.
...so, is it the case the consensus is that +43 - +47 is a "better" offset. When it comes to offset- (which really isn't explained here btw): Clear the brakes Clear the suspension Doesn't rub on the fender Isn't hard on the wheel bearings I'm guessing by better- the 43-47 measure beats the +53 in these facets of fit? Are there any other aspects I'm missing? Thank you by the way. |

offset doesn't really mean much in terms of brake clearance, that is almost purely based on wheel design.
lower offsets also widen the track of the car, reducing weight transfer. going too low results in an increased scrub radius and moves the "dave point" away from the center of the contact patch, reducing steering feel and kickback. |

...ok, good, I like where this is going.
So- you go too low, and the tire rubs on the fender? -is also harder on wheel bearings? |

...is there any formula that correlates offset (in mm) to change in scrub radius?
Most of the information I found on scrub radius talked mostly in terms of ease when parking, or what happens in the event of a braking circuit failure- not in terms of changes in handling while driving + or - |

...or better yet- do you know where the Dave point would be on a stock '05 sti relitave to a wheel with say +47 offset?
That is, do you know if the Dave point is inside the center of the tire on the stock +53 wheel/suspension set up? THANKS! |

Again though.......this is mostly relevant for track cars. Will the average driver notice these things under normal conditions? no. Last edited by sc00by4life; 10-11-2012 at 03:36 PM. |

^^ Disregard. I read the details wrong. It was +25 not +30. I'm definitely not going that low... Guess I'll stick with +42

Still at a loss as why people buy a brand new car and put the cheapest coilovers possible on it. |

I searched and I read...........would appreciate a quick answer. Whats great about this site is all the different opinions it also drives you crazy sometimes. My 2010 Sti stock wheels are 18X8.5 55 offset........I'm getting ready to buy a winter setup. Rim size would be 17x7-17X7.5-or 17X8 depending on which wheel I choose. If I stay with an offset of 45 or higher I should have no issues with brake clearance ???.....The last thing I want to do is ship back 4 wheels. Thank you in advance !!

It's going to be an individual wheel basis. In a totally generic standpoint, a lower offset will be more likely to clear the brakes. But really, individual wheel design matters infinitely more.

Guys..........understood thank you.......So if I order from Tire Rack or Discount Tire the wheels they have in stock specified for my vehicle all should fit with no clearance problems then. I assume they did their homework? 17x7 or 17X8 with a 45 or 47 offset all good ?
