FLI Tuned 320wtq/325whp Built Hybrid w/4Krpms power band!
STI 2.5L block w/100mm bore (supertech pistons, coated race main/rod bearings, cometic HG)
Stage 2 ported WRX heads Jun 256 Cams, Supertech +1mm SS intake/Iconel exhaust valves PE 800cc injectors Blouch TD-05 20g Turbo Link G3 ECU COBB Intake and Cold Air Box Custom Cusco catch can Act flywheel and 6-puck race clutch GrimmSpeed ported/coated headers and uppipe GrimmSpeed 3mm phenolic spacers and coated intake manifold APS TMIC (coated by GrimmSpeed) w/recirc BOV APS Turbo Intake Tuned by Miles at Fine Line Imports in Santa Rosa, CA. This is the Cliff's Notes version of this engine build since we had some issues at first, but I won't get into it in this thread. Power comes on fast and smooth and pulls all the way to redline. 300whp at 3200rpms is pretty nice!! The blue/green base lines are my current tune. The other 'test' lines are with the stock WRX ecu, so he was able to put a bit more area under the curve with the Link G3. This is on a mustang dyno, ambient air temp on the 'test' pull was around 75 degrees, temp on the current base pull was a bit hotter (about 10 degrees), which is why it drops at the end a bit. Obviously big thanks to Miles, Steve and Ryan at FLI. Also, to Trey Cobb for the intake and airbox, and Mike at Blouch for the turbo!! And of course the rest of my sponsors!! Grimmspeed, L&E Fabrication, Metropolitan Motors, Project Solo Gear, Redline Oil (SF)

And yes, the final application will be an open class rally car (on schedule for mid next year), so I was looking for a built 'reliable' race engine...but it doesn't need to make huge numbers because it'll get a 34mm restrictor next year and that's bring torque up a little, but drop total HP. In the meantime, I just wanted a fun street car I'm also currently on DMS 50mm's, which are fun! OK, I just re-hosted this on imageshack, lets see if it works: |

how much boost? i agree seems like too much went into the car just for that kinda power level (not talking about dyno numbers, talking about what a 20g is capable of)

yeah, its a safe tune for sure. peak boost is only 18.5lbs. afr's at wot is ~10.9. And I like the fact that the engine is 'overbuilt' for 320wtq...hopefully it'll last a while under harsh conditions on the stages.

Nice build Jon, this is the first time I'v got to read a full write up on the engine. +1 for building it for reliability and longevity. That power ban is AWESOME!!!

I know this isnt a 1320 car but why do the "test" pulls make better power pass 6250?

I don't know if you race your car or not (and I am not talking about on the street you knuckle head ), but when you do, you will find that it is not about peak #'s. Its about powerband and reliability. It's better to have an overbuilt engine that will get you through the race and give you a chance to win in the end.

Nice fat torque and hp curve..
Those heads sound very similar to a set I had on my car for a bit. They were sweet. 300wtq/whp is good power at 3200 rpm. But once that restrictor is in, most of all the power over 5k will be lost. Usually about 5200 is when the choke happens on the hp #s w/ a 34mm. Basically the top 2k of that powerband will be gone or cut drastically. That's the crappy part about the restrictor. Now you need to gravel tune it with Miles in the right seat. The afr's change drastically with the wheelspin on gravel. Is that a pump or race gas map? If pump, there's more power on the table. Now you need to hang on to the 300wtq on a stage.. It's going to take quite a bit of practice on gravel to get used to it, and a rally x isn't long enough to tap it out in 5th.. do you still have a stock 5 speed in there? Better get that cage in sooner than later for "testing".. |

Is everyone not seeing the tdo5 ? That is as small 20G most likely with a 7cm hot side. While not ideal for top end power it is perfect for his application. I had this set up on my hybrid for a few weeks. It was very strong on just the break in map. Spooled instantly but ran out of steam up top on the break in map. Boost was hard to control too. Sometimes I wish I had just gone EWG , cams, tune and kept that turbo.

And yes, its pump gas, I won't move up to race gas for a while, until I learn to control it all better and actually finish a few rallies. Right now, its a lot to handle on gravel (with snow tires, no less) but I'm getting better at it. and yes, still w/the stock 5MT. I actually had him pull the the boost a little in 1st gear cause the torque hit so hard, I didn't want to break anything. I'll runny the stock tranny through all of next year, or until something breaks (crosses fingers). Last edited by UP2MTNS; 09-21-2008 at 04:30 PM. |

I keep hearing a lot of good things about Miles from FLI but how 'bout that dude Ryan? I guess he's just the secretary(joke). I hope to deal with these guys again in the near future.
