Question PROJECT Black FOX (long - your help needed.... about a car just not a subaru)

So...
Project Black Fox (which Mike meant as a joke, but has been assumed by project Race Neon) is in the works. I have a Red 96 sohc dodge neon that I'm looking to do something productive with. It currently needs some work. It was in an accident, got rearended while parked, and has some minor unibody damage. It'll about 90% road legal by Monday, still need a front windshield, then the whole registration/ inspections stuff. It has about 80k on it, about 5k or so ago it got a new head gasket. The car is the base model w/ no options. When I say that, IT didn't come from the factory w/ a radio. So now that I've laid that out I'm looking for some guidance in the what to do next department.

My current goals :
1. Second daily driver (so it's got to stay road legal (maybe For at least a while, I don't want to continue to put 80+ miles a day on the RS, I've got 14.5K in 6 months)

2. Safty, if I'm going to do something w/ it I want to do it so I don't get hurt

3. Motor sports : yeah, I know a 2.0 FWD car isn't the sweetest track ride, but it's what I got... I like my RS way to much to risk cracking it up (yeah, I'm a wuss, but what would you rather drive daily)

So, I'm taking suggestions on routes/plans to take to get the most out of the car...
first on my list is a cage w/ harnesses but my list isn't an informed one
Your suggestons, help, $$$, comments, jokes, and support will greatly appreciated.
Aaron

I'm not sure of the exact limitations, you'd have to talk to someone more up on cages than I, but if padding a cage is all you need to do in a street car to drive without a helmet, why doesn't every car have one? I'm no professional by any means, but if you're running a Neon with a cage in it at Auto-X events and driving it to work too, what is the RS gonna do all day?

hey... didn't I already tell you what you should do with the car at that party in Ahmerst?

Seriously though, like any other car the second a roll cage goes in it its not a street car anymore.

Since my last car was a neon (even though it wasn't the pansy SOHC) I feel confident you should do the following.

1.) Cold Air Intake
2.) Headers
3.) Exhaust
4.) PCM (computer)

that should give you 20-30 more HP over stick for under 1k

check out www.howellautomotive.com that's where I used to get all my parts from. If you want any more detailed info PM me. My 98 R/T is currently in my garage waiting for me to put a new engine it in, and it has about 2500 bucks worth of mods on it.

Glad it died though.. otherwise I would never have gotten my REX.

I say remove all you can like the back seat and AC and stuff.. if you put in a cage you've pretty much lost a daily drive since you'd need to wear a helmet all the time unless you really want a cracked skull in an accident.

Personally if I had it.. I'd fix it up, strip it, seam weld the body.. put in a cage, get the ACR Neon suspension set (mopar.com) and Auto-X it.

...but for a mean little Auto-X beater car.. ACR struts, R-Compund tires, and a cage will work beautifully... assuming you have some cash to smack down...

The SOHC motor he has is actually better for rally and hillclimb where torque is far more important than HP. I hear many auto-xers prefer the SOHC as well.
As far as the cage/daily driver thing goes. There's a girl, cant think of her name right now, that hillclimbs her Neon and it is her daily driver w/an AutoPower bolt-in cage. She even ran Mt. Washington last year.
Id suggest keeping that thing as stock as possible. That way you dont get put in a class where you are going to get your arse handed to you. Spend the money on saftey and suspension instead.

Thanks guys (bump)... I think I'll have to agree w/ nate, I'd like to keep it in an as stock as possible tune, as to not go against people who are totally demented and actually hook up a neon (:-p)

Good thought Bill I think cheese is an under-utilized aftermarket tuning product. I'm installing my Velveeta roll cage this weekend.

update:
Neon Currently off road awaiting hill climb preparation:

Rear main replacement, new clutch (something really beefy), Harrness mounts & some racing harnesses.
stripped interior.
if money / time permit replace suspension w/ acr stock struts n' springs

Sounds fairly aggressive knowing my budget, but I'm hoping to do most of the work myself.

Sweet.. I'll try and keep you guys posted on any dates that surface for the hillclimbs. Sounds like the car is coming along.. it'll be good to see some other folks on the hill this year.

Nate: I know which girl you're talking about. White neon, two lights on the front. HDPE skidplates under the car. She showed up at the Fairlee Rally-x this year and worked a station at the Mt. Philo Hillclimb. I'm pretty sure she didn't race Burke, Okemo, or Philo though. There's not many girls present at these so... those that are there... get noticed.

Fitz,
Yeah, that's Juliet. She's Ed's girlfriend now. Ed being one of my best friends and the guy that sits on the other side of the 323 GTX we run through the woods.

She was the one! Sheesh... she's kinda funny. So is the guy who sites next to nate.

A word of caution... DO NOT BRING UP MONTY PYTHON around those two.

We had some fun diatribes when I was doing staging at the Rally-X.
