Default Suggest a better head for a '92 SS

I think I need to replace my headgasket, and if I do, I figure it'd be a good time to get a better flowing head. That being said, money is tight. What would be the best bang-for-the-buck head upgrade for an EJ22T?

dohc ej20g heads are great, but somewhat hard to find
you can use ej25 dohc heads but you will need to tap for oil

i dont know of any "good" phase 1 sohc heads

I'd like a simple, inexpensive upgrade. I am OK with hard to find, as long as it's P&P and inexpensive. Is EM required to run a different head an a stock SS ecu?

yeh im running ej20k heads on my 92 ss, these come off 96-98 jdm sti's and they are basically the same as the ej20g heads.... they are Superior to the stock 2.2 heads. i needed no EM to run my dohc heads... its simply a matter of P&P

'96 EJ25 DOHC heads are nice. Tap for oil and coolant. Not that hard to do. The oil feed is there, just take out it's bolt and you should be able to use your banjo bolt; although I haven't tried. Oil return you'd have to drill the bottem for the return, which again is not hard. Get a matching intake manifold and you're all good to go. Might have to extend your wires or may not.

ANY head DOHC or 2.5 SOHC head is an improvement! Some are just better than others!

You need to define what you mean by 'plug and play'.

Any DOHC Subaru head will bolt up, but all will need an intake manifold to go with it. This is where you need to define just how plug and play (or how much fabrication) you wish.

Head on over to www.LegacyCentral.org and start the reading. Folks have done all sorts of DOHC swaps and most have posted about them.

I *personally* believe the least expensive DOHC swap is to find a deal on a COMPLETE EJ20G and swap in your EJ22T shortblock into it. All those hoses, pipes, and tubes can be hard to track down if you "just get some heads and a manifold". Of course I value a stock looking swap, you may not.

Picking up a second set of EJ22T heads and having cams and a bit of portwork done has also been proven to be effective for "street" power levels, but seems to be out of favor lately.

As little fabrication as possible would be best, but I guess it depends on how much gains I will get. If head X will give me 15% gains and require very little modification/fab and head Y will give me 20% gains but require a lot of modification, I'd likely just take X. That being said, if Y gave me 30%+ gains or so, it may then be worth the extra work to me. FYI, I'm not using the % numbers as actual targets, just throwing out numbers for arguments sake.

Power goals for the car are only about 250 bhp, so I'm not looking for anything crazy. Actually, it'd be really cool if it improved fuel efficiency.

FInd the post about Matt Monson dropping an EJ20G in place of his 2.2t. He dropped the engine in and ran it off the 22t ecu and had a rediculous amount of power straight away. I wanna say it was in the neighbor hood of 70hp at the wheels increase

Yep. It was 70whp with an Ej20G with JDM Td04 and slanty intercooler. You can get a wagon or auto tranny engine and just drop it in there. Should cost you less than $1000 including freight.

You've got to unwrap the manifold wiring harness so that the coolant temp. sensor can reach the other side of the crossover pipe. That's about it. Then sit on your Ej22T bottom end until you have more money and build it for more power.
