Default BETTER HEAD.... i mean heads, 2.0l

Ok im new to the whole subaru scene with my first being a 1996 legacy for a winter beater, to my recent 02 wrx wagon.
my previous background consists of building small block and big block chevys to building honda engines. in my experiance the top end is where the power lyes. not i have noticed that there is not much emphasis on the top end on the subarus. to be more specfic the wrx 2.0l, i think this engine has is a grate platform with a beautiful over square bore and an almost perfect rod to stroke ratio of 1.738 (1.75 being ideal) i believe that there is allot of power ready to be unleashed in the top end through PNP and cams.

has anyone done any of this work to the factory 2.0 heads or is everyone swapping for the sti heads? (imo is a waste) kinda like installing a vtec head on a honda and not hooking up the vtec, you get some but not what it can be.

what type of cams are out there that people are using if you are and what kind of numbers did you lay down (or feeling in the seat of your pants)

i understand the boxer engine makes it a very hard thing to do but lets see if it is worth it

i plan on getting either just a set of 2.0l heads if i can find some for cheap, or a whole engine to re build. i want to put down my experience with other engines and see if it is truly worth it. anyone have any advice or experiences with this?

I believe late v7 EJ207s came with big port heads. Try some searches for EJ207 and EJ205/257 Hybrids.

You can virtually drop in STI cams, that should unleash alot of room. Along with your PNP deal

ok well with the amount of work to be done to the sti cams and the cost, wouldn't it be worth it to go with a set of lets say brian crower cams that are designed for the head? also arent the sti cams a variable valve timing cam or a version of it?

now i say that i think im gonna resurch the sti valving

well no offense to anyone but i am not totally impressed by the AVCS, guess ill have to go for a drive in one to appreciate it. using the same lobes through the rpm but changing the curve is still a grate set up but i guess i am just a fan of honda's approach lol (a little sack religious)

If you don't want to mess with the 2 liter heads then just hook yourself up with a set of group n heads or spend some more money and get some cosworth heads

AVCS is essentially the I in I-vtec.... Its a marvolous thing when dialed in (from everything I've read and the logs I've seen)

If you want to do the deed and quickly, pick up a set of big port v7/v8 heads and slap em on your 2.0 (the cams will be plenty). Coupled with a larger 18/20g you will be able to make some decent power in stock form.

The 2.0 is good till around 350-375 whp, it needs rods and pistons after that. My guess is the heads start being a restriction at that point too. Cams duration and lift is simply too short/small. Flow restrictions of the head itself are bad after that point.

Either pick up a good used set of big port jdm heads or have yours worked with some 264/264 cams, but you will run out of "bottom" end before you start making good power....

^^ thank you very much for that informative answer. my goals are to run around the 300 mark, but i want it so the engine and components do not have over work themselves. i have found with my other builds if you over build an engine than de tune it you get best results. IMO

The cheapest and most straight forward option will be to P&P your oem 2.0 heads and throw some cams on them.
