I see it as a continuation of the dumbing down of job that used to require some skill. I'm sure you have all noticed that many counter people can't count back change, if the 'puter doesn't tell them what my change is their screwed.

Jeep's recently started this Vin for parts thing. Luckily when I said I didn't have it (buying oil filters ), also wanted to price brake pads, the guy said he could still look it up.

Why is it so much to ask that you know [i]something[i] about the products you sell? I was asked if it was a 4 door (none made) if it had the 4.0 (all Rubicons were) did it have rear disk brakes (all Rubicons do). The first time I brought it in for an oil change(2 months old/3000 mile), I was actually waited on by The Service Manager. HE asked me if it was a 4.0. I nearly got back in and drove off. See where I'm going?

I would also be curious if they change brake pad #'s mid year, why? The new #'s better or they wouldn't change mid year. Do I want the "old" style?

I am really surprised at the lenght of this thread and the fact that some of you think we have some kind of alternate reason for getting VIN beyond the obvious....trying to get the right part the first time for the customer. Parts professionals have no interest in doing anything but selling parts to their customers. Manufacturers (all manufacturers) make changes in design, vendor, etc throughtout the model years. We used to depend on the production date and the VIN. We would have to break down the VIN in the paper catalog and then go to the page, look for the specific model and then find the proper production date range to get the correct part. Now...we just enter the VIN and go to the page we need, click on the number next to the little picture and bingo....we have the correct part number for your vehicle.
Body shops and mechanical shops know that providing the VIN helps them get the right part the first time thus satisfying their customers. Is it perfect? No, because it depends on information provided by the manufacturer who, like all humans, does make mistakes. I get far more calls from folks who got the wrong parts than I do from someone who is refusing to give my counter people their VIN. Stop being so damned paranoid.......

The catalog system Subaru uses requires the full VIN to filter correctly.

Also, it doesn't keep your VIN in a database. The VIN numbers are erased when the program is closed (often times even before that). They don't get stored or filed or anything else.

I can find almost any part number without a VIN, but sometimes it helps because there are odd model year splits and things that are just easier to make sure are correct with a VIN supplied.

If I remember I'll take a screenshot or something for the haters.

15208 AA100 and no, I don't need your VIN number. Would you like a crush washer with that? Perhaps some oil?

I left Anchorage, Alaska not long ago after three years of residence where a PAIR of local Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep dealerships in town were blacklisting Rubicon owners all over the city for warranty work, and kept electronic records of the respective vehicle's u-joint, stub shaft, and hub replacements, as well as drivetrain fluid conditions (i.e., silt, sand, shavings) at change intervals. These were submitted to a database shared by the dealers in order to prevent warranty-work to customers who had been flagged as possibly, GOD FORBID, taking their Rubicons....... gasp...... off road.

This is fact, and admitted by one of the two Dealerships. Do you honestly believe that new-car dealerships are honest, customer centric operations still in this age?

Cool Not a big deal!!!

I work at a subaru dealership and the reason why they ask for the vin is to find exact parts especific to your car because each car is different

Does anyone know where I can get an sti motor, drive train, and the whole works for my 93 wagon. A salvaged sti would be ideal.

The Vin# helps the parts people get you the correct part. a lot of production changes occur throughout the year.

I did not know there was a Parts Jerks thread. Allright just my kind of place. I have part number wars with the Parts Manager all the time.

About VIN's.

It is all a bunch of crap. 95***37; of the time you do not need the VIN. VIN whores are lazy scumbags that don't want to do work. I never ask for the vin unless I really need it. Without it there is always a way...

BTW: FAST for the win!

Absolutely. Obviously most of the people reading this thread have never been on the other side of the counter. As cars become more and more complex, and variances within a model become more pronounced, their is no way a parts person can keep up without computer help.

Those complaining must be the ones who call up "Uh, I need a set of pads for a Legacy?" What year. Is in an Outback or GT. Does it have stability control. Maybe it is a Spec B? How would parts person know this without a VIn?

I actually work at a Subaru dealership, and the reasoning behind this is simply that the VIN for your car contains the model code of the vehicle, as well as trim level, and different trim levels actually can have different specs. Also, being in the car business, you would be SHOCKED at the number of people who doen't know the correct year on their car, or even the actual model, engine size, etc etc... So, by collecting your VIN, the parts guys are actually streamlining the process, and therefore saving the hassle of returned parts for the wrong model and whatnot, which in turn makes everyone happy. Yeah...

A tad bit late, but THANKS!

I didn't get to where I am by NOT knowing the Suby parts catalogs. When I left my dealer job we still had Microfiche and PAPER CATALOGS? (OMG!!). I'm one of the few people that can say "I LOVE MY JOB", parts slinger or not.

My father in law was turned away from buying Touch Up Paint because he did not know the VIN for my car. How many colors of WRB Pearl Touch Up existed in the year 2002?

haha, just goes to show parts dept associates are getting dumber and dumber, I work in parts, not for subaru, another brand, and a vin is helpful, but not a necessity........ lasy half assed employees if you ask me, and people who shouldnt be doing this job, I was in today to ask about the bumper again, once again got told to get a vin for a car that came with the bumper, I told the fixed op's manager to fire both of them for their incompetance and unwillingness to help a customer.
