Cobb it is, then. 2 minutes to save your stock tune, 3 minutes to flash the new tune, and you're done.

Good suggestion. I did look at these quite a bit. TBH, I'm starting to lean towards the suggestions to go with a AP and catted DP to start, and see how that sounds.

Thanks for all the feedback.

Exactly.

BTW, I emailed Nameless to ask about the 10% gloss black and whether it affects winter/salt resistance at all. I'll let you know what I hear back.

Cool. Just keep in mind the Nameless exhausts are aggressive sounding. They sound very good, but they are significantly louder than stock. YouTube has quite a few vids of them. Videos are not the best way to gauge exhaust sound, but the ones I listened to showed the Nameless is loud compared to others.

i'm running Stage 2 as follows:
Cobb SF Intake + Box
Cobb Catted DP w/ OEM Cat-back
Cobb AP w/ Protune (i had issues with the OTS maps)

i ran the Q300 for almost 2 weeks and took it off. way too loud. i finally met up with someone last week who was running a Cobb DP w/ SPT cat-back and it was perfect. i plan on getting the SPT cat-back in the spring unless i hear the Greddy SP Elite...

youtube videos are useless in determining loudness IMO. some of the better quality video's will give you an idea, but you can't "feel" them by riding in the car for yourself.

hope it helps.

Thanks for the info. Would you group the magnaflow nameless axleback in with this too though? That one sounds pretty mellow, at least on video.

As far as looks, the stock catback and muffler/tips don't look terrible so just leave them alone. Just my 2 cents, from experience.

+1 ^^^ coming from a 49 year old geezer running a downpipe (catless), stock catback and TP Stage 2 tune.

Magnaflow and Nameless are two distinct companies with two distinct products, unless they've merged or something.

The Nameless is the louder of the two. I've seen here people complain about drone with the Magnaflow too though.

My stage 2 is the COBB downpipe with STI exhaust. Probably the best way to keep it liveable on the highway if you are sensitive to that as I am. A little more volume. Sounds a bit blatty at idle from the outside, but inside it sounds fine.

I like my catted perrin DP, maddad whisper catback, drop in filter in stock air box, stage 2 OTS tuned. Quiet and quick.

+1 on Maddad. The whisper was designed exactly for people like you. The items are really well made, a gentleman's exhaust. I have personally met the owner of Maddad and it's a guy that I like giving my business to. He sometimes takes extra few days to respond but if you have a problem, he does get back to you and stands behind his products. The whisper is exactly what you're looking for. I am running his street essentials exhaust, which is a little bit louder than whisper and it's very much a worthy DD setup. The only downside, the price. You get what you pay for. And what you're paying for is the design and quality of construction. As a second option, consider TurboXS setup. It's supposed to be quiet and the price is pretty competitive. Whatever you go with, just remember that the hatches are much more prone to droning and few options out there will not drone and be quiet inside. Your choices will be limited because of that. I can tell you, there are few things more annoying than a droning exhaust. Don't make that mistake because you wanted to save a few $$.

This thread was helpful with answering some questions I have had but haven't asked. I think I will go with a DP and AP OTS map (when the warranty expires) for my needs along with tranny mount and a few other things later on. Going to skip on the exhaust =)

Yeah... NO

http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show....php?t=2310459

Remember, only listen to people with a similar car. A 08+ hatchback and an 08+ sedan will have vastly different sounds with the same brand exhaust. Mainly the hatches are known to be more prone to drone. Anyone offering their opinion with a 02-07, is a nice gesture, but ultimately pointless. You can only compare hatchback to hatchback. The acoustics in the interior are that different.

I personally have the Cobb CBE and wouldn't trade it for the world. Refined sound when driving around town, and sounds down right mean when opened up.

Nameless incorporates the Magnaflow muffler in one of their designs. It is their quietest hatch axle back.

Im a old guy also (49) with a picky wife, the maddad with a catted down pipe works for us, no drone. A custom tune is also the way to go. I went with an e-tune.

The downpipe makes the power. The car back makes the noise.

Oh, you freaking geezer wannabe's in your 40's...... Yore doing it rong if you think you're old now. And if you think the kids need a quiet car, you're also wrong. As a guy who tuned 40 during the last century, I'm going to chime in.

A loud exhaust in a Subaru? Please. You can run straight pipes catless and the turbo alone will quiet it down more than my Cobra was.

The side pipes were not for show and as you can see, exits pretty much directly below your (or my son's) ear.

Loud, rumbling exhausts put kids to sleep faster than anything else out there. When the kids were 6-8, they'd last all of 5 minutes before zonking out. Your Subaru has the exhaust (jack points) way back there pointing behind you. You're going to hear almost nothing. I know....my Elise is running a Larini exhaust, which is also louder than any Subaru could possibly be.

If you don't want the attention from the cops, then I respect your decision, but don't give me that crap that it's for the kids. Kids don't fall asleep in a Lexus (the quietest car around) unless it's from sheer boredom.

Now back to our regularly scheduled program. I gotta find Barnaby Jones on this here TV.

Thanks! Leaning this way at the moment based on you, Gallo2011's and other's input. Every post here has been helpful in some way. Great forum.

Yeah, Nameless has a version of their exhaust that uses a magnaflow muffler vs the 5"/4"/delete custom options. It's supposed to be pretty quiet and unassuming.

Lol .. I was thinking the same thing.

When I was a baby, my dad used to drive me around in a 71 Super Bee with headers. He says I had no issues falling asleep.

Kids like drone and vibration.

Yes, I was looking hard at the maddad whisper a few years back. It definitely appears to be high quality and seems to have a great, low growl that isn't too loud. Price is a bit high though. Maybe I will start with the catted DP and tune, and upgrade to some like this down the line if I still have the itch...

Yeah, part of the reason I posted here and named the thread this way was to hopefully help others that have similar goals. Sounds like you got it figured out... I think I'm getting closer to a final decision too (well, at least for "part 1" of going stage 2... lol)

Love, love, love your car! Trust me, if I had one of those I wouldn't be asking about quiet exhausts.

I think you misunderstood my original post... the quietness of the exhaust has almost nothing to do with my kids (who are teenagers btw, and probably would like a louder sound). It was more about setting the "tone" of the thread (no pun) and helping forum members understand the type of person I am, and what I'm looking to achieve. The wife on the other hand... well, she might care but probably not as much as other wives. The simple reality is that this car is my dd, and I really don't want it to be loud.

I actually don't feel old, and I'm in pretty good shape physically... I'm "old" in my lifestyle though, meaning I have the somewhat typical daily schedule of driving to work, driving home, picking the kids up at practice, going to kids games and school events, rinse and repeat. In a couple more years, they'll both be off to college and I'm buying a bad ass car. I bought the WRX because it was the best balance of practicality and sportiness for the price. A low-to-mid priced AWD, 5 door family hauler with a bit of a nasty side.

No doubt. Anyone with kids (and a car) know driving them around as babies will put them to sleep.

Hey, that was the first title I thought of for this thread, but switched it to be a play on "No Country for Old Men" instead. Either way, sounds like a fun thread.

So... is that a no? (re: whether DP + tune changes the sound)

Sorry for my confusion, but I think others were saying there was a slight change in sound. Thanks!

From personal experience, the noise is more about your schedule and what your neighbors and yoru spouse can tolerate. I get up early in the AM to work out so I am out there door before 6am. I live in an area where neighbors are close enough that if I crank it up in the AM when it's nice and quiet, they'll hear me. Note that our cars are typically very loud on cold starts when they first start idling and they get that low frequency sound propagating through the area. Deep sounds travel further and are more noticeable. So, if you crank it over first thing in the morning and it wakes the wife up upstairs and the neoghbors across the street, that's not good. You can take the "I don't care" approach but then you're a d-bag and your quality of life will suffer. So, depending on where you live and what your lifestyle is, you may/may not get away with having loud cars. I personally can get away with moderate loudness but if I go too loud, it becomes a problem at home and at work.

As a side note, cold starts were my major issue. I addressed it by altering my idle targets such that the car idles slightly lower when it warms up. This changed the sound enough that it does not wake up anybody in the house anymore.
