Default What type of sand paper do I need?

Hey guys I picked up a pair of thoroughly scuffed sideskirts that aren't my color and I plan to paint them. Question is, what is the series of grits that I will need to get this job done?

Also, I need primer or some sort of promoter right?

The procedure should be Sand > Sand > Prime > Paint X times > clear coat x times right?

Thanks guys

depends on how scuffed they are...i would start with a very light grit and see how that works. less scratching you do will make you job easier.

Are the sideskirts painted now or still raw plastic?

I bought my 02 used with unpainted side skirts. The first thing I did was scrub them with dish detergent and then simple green to get as much grease/tar/etc off before sanding. Then I started with 60 for the gouges and parts that needed to be smoothed out. Then 80, wash and sand. 120, wash, sand and repeat until they were squeaky clean and smooth. I think I ended with 200 or 300 for the final before paint. You want them smooth, but not so smooth the paint has nothing to adhere to. Several thin coats of primer, paint and clear later they are still holding after 1+ year.

I would use bull dog adhesion promoter before you seal it. You don't have to use primer unless you want to fill some scratches. If they are new and unpainted all you really need to do is use Scuff it and a red scuff pad. Spray your adhesion promoter and seal it. Base/clear and you are done.

I am receiving really scuffed up scratched silver sideskirts which I plan to sand like all of you awesome people have advised above and then paint regal blue pearl. Thanks for all the info guys - I won't be getting to this project till I get home from college but when I do I'll post pics every friggin step of the way. Heck maybe I'll so one step, post it, wait for feedback, and move on to the next just to be sure they come out perfect.

You've all been really helpful.

These guys are really trying to make you work.

As long as there are no deep scratches or pits all you need to do is a light sanding with 400 grit and then paint. No need for primer unless the paint already on there is not good, i.e peeling and chipping.
