Default My impressions and comments on the new WRX and WRX STI...

Hey everyone,

Like everyone else here, I'm looking for feedback and opinions on the new WRX and WRX STI. I must admit I was taken by surprise by a few of the specs. Anyway, I 've summarized them below as comments based on how the specs were broken down at www.impreza.subaru.com :

***61623; Exterior: Hate the new headlights and foglights. I thought a true rally car should have huge “bugeye” fog lights at least!!! (not to mention the headlights have gone the way of Acura RSX – UGLY!!). Having HID’s is cool and safe, but I’ll like getting the JDM Bugeye HID for my old 2002 WRX, thank you!

***61623; Interior: That's kindda cool and ingenious to make ALL the gauges max out when starting her up. It’s cool, but how long before APC and all the other aftermarket Honda parts makers start mimicing this feature?? It’ll get played out very quickly

***61623; AWD Philosphy: Finally DCCD is here!!!. How long before someone comes out with instructions on swaping this into a 2002/2003 WRX??!!

***61623; Engine/Transmission: First thing I have to say is that with this new STI, I consider Subaru as somewhat of a TRAITOR to the soul of the WRX. The essence of the WRX was to obide by it’s WRC requirement of a max. 2.0L turbo engine. What the F**K!!, why do they need to go to a 2.5L engine to create 300hp when that’s easily attainable through the EJ20??!!!! However, 300hp is awesome cause it spanks the EVO VIII’s 270ish HP!!!!!! Plus the EVO VIII doesn’t come to the states with a 6 speed and the STI does!!! (HaHa, in your face EVO !!!) AVCS is awesome! Does the EVO come with that?? I don’t think so.

***61623; Handling/Braking: Hopefully the Brembo kit is an easy upgrade into the 2002/2003 WRX. I’m sure it’ll be cheaper now that SOA and aftermarket companies have access to Brembo parts without having to import them into the states! How popular will the EBD be. I guess for the novice driver, it’ll be OK, but if you’re buying an STI to use it for what it’s really meant for, it’ll probably be more of a nuisance than anything else (I could be wrong, I look forward to hearing feedback from those brand spankin’ new STI owners )

If I get one (hardly doubt it at this time), I'd swap the fronts, and sell my 03 with an 04 front... hmmm...

I agree with you there ... 2.5L/3L can go into a Forester or Legacy, but a WRX needs to stay 2L. But when you have something like a 300hp STi ready for you to buy, you sort of forget about it after awhile

Have a Nice Day?

Again, mostly emission issues - I don't think you can pass emissions here making 300hp out of a 2L turbo 4.

I would have loved a hot EJ 20 with twin scroll turbo. But what the heck I am not squawking about 2.5 L with 300 hp and gobs of torque. It will make the STI one teriffic street machine.

With that drivetrain and all the goodies it has (trick diffs galore) I can even live with ugly new body - I am sure it will grow on me.

about the enging,
Read this:

http://www.spdusa.com/new_page_4.htm

Will explain that 270 is not gonna reliably come outta the stock one we have with:

1) our gas, or
2) our engine parts.

Plus, the whole 2.0 L thing is moot. Japan still has the 2.0 (and 100 octane), and most WRC cars are just shadows of their real world counterparts since the FIA homologation rules are bypassed. When you ever hear about an AWD Focus ( . . .yet).

Default I am excited.... really!

I'll await full judgement until I find out when the turbo kicks in. I admit that I am not good enough to fully motivate the 300 ponies into a complete gallop. Therefore if the turbo kicks in around 2500 - 2700 I'll be ecstatic. The twin scroll turbo (allows for quick spooling) was what I was looking for in the STi.

A second aspect which will bear watching is the suspension points. In Paul Hansen's review of the Japanese version, the suspension had been retuned to be wider with less understeer. He raved about it in fact.

I do not know enough about the effects of the DCCD(mostly how to compensate for the changes to the car's handling), I will probably leave it in Auto mode.

I am most pleased about the stronger tranny, the number 300 (twice!!), as well as the interior accoutrements.

This post seems like I am disappointed, but I am not. I think my impression is that the 2.5L engine changes the type of car I looked forward to driving from the one Paul Hansen reviewed. Will I buy it? My 200RS goes off lease in June 2004. I'll be able to wait for the initial uphoria to wane and then I'll pounce on the 2005 WRX STi...

Wildnuts,

I'm assuming the AWD Focus you're referring to is the Focus RS with the Karhman package? If so, that car rocks, but I don't think the US will ever see that focus, I think the SVT is the top of the line for the US focus.

Wildnuts,

Regardless of wether or not the true rally cars nolonger submit to homologation, SOA would be lying to the public if it marketed the car as a derivative of a true Subaru rally car

I agree....UGLY front end but look at our EVO! Sunfire anyone? I'll take the RSX looking lights vs. sunfire whole front end!LOL

Defi makes these gauges already man, in fact I believe they are the ones who made them for the STI...they are NOT cheap...and I pray APC doesn't make them.

Oh, didn't know Defi made those gauges. Hopefully they have a 20 year patent on them!!!

o now that someone mentioned about passing emission, something comes to my mind...

how many cats will the STi have????

our WRX has 3...and if we remove them, we would get at least 20+hp gain...

i'm very curious...

i guess the STi is not gonna be a ULEV anymore...

Will this come with Factory/SOA support?

Can we mod this one without fear of the Warranty Police?

You must ALWAYS fear the Warranty Police. The STi is a factory tuned WRX... you put anything on it aftermarket and be ready for the headaches that ensue...

My dealership would not look at a problem I had with my highbeams and fogbeams because I changed my headlights to Sylvania Silverstars... turned out that I had a blown fuse.
