Hella 500 foglight install help needed
Since the instructions that came with them are for a completely different model, can someone please help me out.
I opened the box with the fogs in it, and there's only one wire with a spade connector coming out of the housing of the light. Where's the ground? If I was dealing with two wires, I wouldn't even be asking, but after examining the stock fogs, I'm perplexed. The light has a plastic housing, with no exposed metal anywhere that could be used for a ground. Also, how do you change a bulb on these things? Crack open the housing?

I have a set of 500s on my Land Rover. You should have two wires coming out of the rubber grommet (one ground and one +). To change the bulb, remove the screw at the bottom of the housing. You can then remove the lens/reflector assembly to get at the bulb. You should also find a place to connect the ground wire somewhere on the bulb holder.

Thanks for the help. With shaky hands and a little time, I was able to pop the light out of the housing. I was hesitant to do that earlier, since it looked like the white goo used to hold the halves of the glass/reflector together was actually holding the glass into the housing. I'm happy that's not the case.
Lo and behold, on the edge of the ring that holds the bulb in place, another spade connector for the ground wire. Looks like I have a project after all. I read that I don't need to use the relay for the 55W light bulbs, so if I don't get the instructions by Tuesday, I may try that. Do your lights have the Hella mount point, or do you have some special bracket? I'm wondering if the Hella bracket is beefy enough to keep the light from vibrating. There are brackets available from rallylights.com, but I'm wondering if I need it. I had some fogs on another car that weren't solid enough, and it drove me so nuts, I never used them. Can these be mounted inverted? |

I've got a set of kartboy mounts laying around that work well for mounting them in the stock spot, pm me if you'd like to buy them. That'd be for the stock fog spot, are you mounting there or somewhere else?
I had 500's, I'd reccomend running them on the relay they give you, its a safer solution long term and if you decide to go higher on the wattage you don't have to rewire later. Don't the housings have a single screw on the front you unscrew to let the glass free? You shouldn't really have to do any prying. I ran the wire to signal the relay from the fog light wiring, so that switch worked for the lights just like the fogs. I'd already wired the fogs to come on whenever I wanted (not just with lows), and I think its a good idea to do that too since you want them on with your high beams or possibly on their own. |

Thanks for the responses, folks. I'm not getting email notifications for this thread, I'll re-subscribe.
thechickencow- -Thanks for the offer of the brackets, I'll PM you if these are too jittery. -Guess I'll try to make heads or tails out of the instructions for the relay. I'd like to do this project exactly once. -The glass definitely doesn't just pop out of my set, they must be a bit tight. It happens. -Definitely doing the foglight mod, I've put it off too long already... jak04- Thanks for the confirmation. I could care less about the stickers, I was more jazzed about hiding the mount point and lens retainer up under the overhang of the foglight recess. |

Well, they're in, but I'm running them on the stock circuit for now. No matter what I did, I couldn't get the included relay setup to work. And, my voltmeter (you know, the one that's been sitting in my toolbox in the garage for three years) was all crapped up inside from a corroded battery. Hello Harbor Freight!
Oh, well, at least the wires are already run to where they need to go when I do figure it out. |

I run my Hella 500 foglamps spliced into the OEM wiring. I don't have any plans (yet) to run bulbs higher than 55w so it wasn't all that imperative that i use a relay and run thicker wires. Maybe in the future i may rewire them with a relay.

That's my situation as well. If I'd wanted brighter lights, I would've gotten the driving lights instead. I like the nice bump in brightness with the 55W bulbs, and plus, the fogs just look
If anything, I'll add small driving lights later. |
