A better design study might be a competitor for the KTM X-bow.

An affordable sports car from Yamaha would be more winning than Charlie Sheen.

Yamaha is Toyota's performance engine partner. I suspect they're choosing not to step on big-brother's toes by entering the affordable auto market. |

I have wondered what various motorcycle engines would be like.
A Triumph Rocket 3 engine in a Morgan 3-wheeler would be EPIC. A BMW K1600 I6 as a transverse midship layout, with the center-aligned transmission driving a similarly centralized differential (not asymmetrical axle shafts like most transverse car engines) would be awesome. Yamaha makes great engines, too. YZF-R1 has long been among the top supersport I4 bikes. The only hurdle for aftermarket is engineering a reverse gear solution to suit... which a manufacturer would have much less trouble integrating into the design. Cars can't be walked backwards like a bike with feet on the ground. |

One more for you, Hip.
Honda Gold Wing H6 in a mid-engine car or Lotus 7. It's shaft drive and has reverse already. Turbocharge it and you've got an easy 400hp. |

When Yamaha does car stuff...awesome stuff happens:
Toyota 2000GT: Ford Taurus SHO: (engine was just about the only good thing in that car ) Toyota 180hp 1.8 NA...started life in Celica GTS/Matrix XRS/Vibe GT....ended in: Lotus Elise: And the V8 for Volvo....decent motor...later used in : Noble m600: The world would be a better place if the Tuning Fork Folks did a bit more 4 wheeled engineering. |

The world needs more Yamaha!
I have a 1997 200 HP Yamaha Saltwater Series II outboard that has seen 15 years of duty on a ski boat. The thing has been beaten with WOT hole shots in salt water every day in the summer. It runs like new. Nothing but routine maintenance at the beginning and end of the season. You cannot kill this thing. Unbelievable engine. |

Suzuki should have taken this approach. They have lots of knowledge building performance engines in their motorcycles, why not build a small Lotus Elise type vehicle. Instead they build economy cars and we all now know where that lead them.

they came up with several promising prototypes but never followed through. Imagine if the Miata had been built by Suzuki or Yamaha.

We had a Yamaha 115hp 2 stroke outboard when I was a kid. We ran that thing flat out all the time. My dad sold it to a friend in the late 90's when the engine was 14 years old. My dad used it the entire time the other person owned it. Then they wanted to sell the boat and my dad got another friend to buy the rig. My dad is still using the boat 26 years later running that Yamaha wide open with no problems, without the headaches of boat ownership. I owned 2 FZR-1000's and those bikes were just incredible in the early 90's. Smooth, reliable and fast. I have a little ttr125 dirt bike I ride around with my kids and it's cold blooded, just like all Yamaha's, but it's very reliable.

Guys, Yamaha has had a hand in the engine design of pretty much every performance Toyota. They're Toyota's default performance engine supplier/consulting firm. You can sort of think of Yamaha as Toyota's M or AMG division. They did substantial design work on the LF-A's engine, and the IS-F's.
The close relationship is why I think it's unlikely we'll see an affordable Yamaha automobile any time soon. LF-A style engineering chest thumping exercise? Maybe. Yamaha branded gen 4 MR2? Not likely. Much as I drool at the prospect. As to this car design concept, it's cool but it'll be too expensive. If Yamaha wants to show off, I think a superbike statement piece is a better choice. Think 2014 version of the NR750. |
