The rear end is simply too busy. I cleaned out the lines that are supposed to match the hood, removed the gigantic reflectors (make them smaller or incorporate into the lights), and of course added more paint.
I'm still not entirely happy with it, but really its not bad. As has been said, the front and sides are pretty well done. Overall I applaud GM for taking the rear in a new direction. Last edited by THeArtoF-; 01-22-2013 at 06:06 PM. |

There are some photochops of the rear end on The Mustang Source - done a little better IMO, but with the same intent of lessening the cheap black plastic look. It's the tail lights that really kill the look. Get rid of the prison tear drop tattoo vents and flip those lights upside down. Then, maybe...
And that F-40, still good looking after all these years. |

The F40 looks like a race car with some cheap 1980s trailer lights used to make it just barely road legal. The Corvette doesn't need to look like it has trailer lights just because the C3, C4, C5 & C6 had what looked like cheap trailer lights. It's a car built by one of the largest car companies on the planet.. it should have modern, styled tail lights.
You know what cars still have 1980s trailer lights on the rear? Cars built by tiny sports car makers that make track cars that are barely passable on the street. |

So after years of building cars with "cheap trailer lights" GM found the need to overcompensate in this area by overstyling them along with the rear end as a whole. It does not match the relatively cleaner look of the front. IMO these lights + the black plastic vents and bumper area serve to cheapen the look of the car.
And yes, the F40 is pretty much a race car that had barely legal road versions sold to satisfy FIA homologation rules. |

Ugh, looks like I got it backazzwards. F40 was a road car derivative of the 288 GTO Evoluzione which, along with Porsche's 959, found itself without a place to compete when FIA did away with the Group B sportscar/rally racing class. Guess Ferrari did not want to see the 288 GTO Evo's developmental work wasted and the company's 40th anniversary was coming up so...
However it did "go back to its roots" and ended up racing in the late 80's to mid-90's in the hands of private race teams in various GT racing series in F40 LM and Competizione guises. |

I spitballed this thought on another forum, thought I'd post it here:
The more important question is going to be what kind of mid-model update will the C7 get when the new Mustang launches. I'm not a Ford fan, but objectively, Ford really took the gloves off with the 2011 update to the Mustang. The next-generation Mustang is rumored to get an IRS, a substantial reduction in curb weight (100+lb at least), and possibly a DI update to the Coyote. For the first time since pretty much ever, it looks like the next-gen GT might become a legitimate threat to the Corvette. That's speculation of course, and it probably won't actually beat the Corvette, but it could become close enough to make buyers question the price/performance difference between the two cars. And something like the Boss could actually step on toes. The next-gen Alpha platform Camaro will see similar improvements, so I think the "pony" cars are going to be in a very interesting position vis-a-vis the Vette in a few years. The fact that both GM and Ford are considering optional twin-turbo V6's for the next Camaro/Mustang will make things even more interesting to the warranty-indifferent tuner market. Indeed, I think GM could be thrust into an uncomfortable place with the next Camaro. If Ford really delivers on the Mustang, the Camaro that can match it will be perilously close to cannibalizing Corvette marketshare; even to the point where differentiating the Camaro SS and base Corvette motor may become a necessity. It's going to be interesting to watch, that's for sure. |

The best Mustang is already closely matched to the base Corvette performance wise. I will thoroughly enjoy the day when Corvette drivers jump ship.

Given the high performance output of the Caddy "V" models, the Camaro Z28 and ZL-1, and the upcoming Chevy SS I don't think GM really cares or is worried about taking away from Corvette sales. |

Totally different market.
IMO, spending $65k for a well equipped Mustang GT500 ($70k for convertible) before dealer mark ups is a very poor move. But for the people that really want a Mustang from the factory that's slightly behind par of the C7's performance. . . well, the marketing team should get a bonus check (same for ZL1). |

And then Corvette goes on to win a 7th Lemans title with the C7R and all doubters will be forced to be quiet...
I think the back end is ugly as well, and I have never actually wanted a corvette personally, but I can appreciate the amazing performance/dollar value, and I DEEPLY respect ANY Model of car that can win LeMan MULTIPLE times. |

Even I am considering saving up my dollars and getting a '15/'16 C7 Z51. By that time you'll easily get it for $4-5k under MSRP.

I really like the front of the car. However, it looks like they ran out of ideas on how to finish the rear of the car and just slapped a Camaro rear end on it.

Wow, just got sight of the new look. I applaud them for breaking some tradition and bringing a breath of fresh air, but I see the rear as 1) VERY busy 2) potentially very polarizing and 3) yet another overuse of the Camaro taillight 'default'. I think they maybe should have chosen between the exhaust pipe organ or the busy crazy taillights and vents and such. It just looks so damn busy back there. Busier than any vette has looked ever...yet with a smack of GTR to it as well. Curious to see how its received.
